Stage 13: Scotland The Brave

Lavelanet to Bйziers 171km

After the last two days of Armstrong domination, to-days transitional stage from Lavelanet to Bйziers takes the riders from the Pyrenees area down to the Mediterranean.

The start to-day was without Jacky Durand (FDJ) who had been holding on to the team car on the climbs yesterday, also the second team director was disqualified.

The early break was instigated by Laurent Jalabert (CSC), collecting more points for his mountains jersey, with the maximum points gained to-day insured the jersey stay’s on his back for at least the next two days, what ever happens on Mont Ventoux tomorrow. He was joined by Etxebarria, Julich, Mazzoleni, Martinez, Millar, Brochard, Boogerd, Zberg, Pascual & Latasa. With no one important on overall, US Postal kept things to-gether behind, Jalabert being the best placed rider at over 17 minutes, they could afford to take it easy. The maximum lead got to 13 mins 43 secs with 30 kms to the finish when the Lampre team started to chase, with no apparent reason, the time gap started to come down but with no chance of catching them before Bйziers.

Up front Millar caused a split in the group with Brochard, Etxbarria, Latasa & Boogerd for company, Julich, Jalabert, Martinez & Zberg tried to close on them with Pascual and Mazzoleni in between. At 3 kms out they were all looking at each other, Brochard was keen for the win and made 3 or 4 jumps, Millar sat at the back and let it unfold (very cool), Latasa launched an attempt under the red kite, he was pulled back to try again, Brochard came round him and Millar came off his wheel for a fine win for Cofidis and Scotland, the bunch was lead in by Baden Cooke at 9 mins 56 secs.
