Stage 18: Two Days left To Paris

Cluses / Bourg-en-Bresse 176.5 km

It was a relatively peaceful day as the yellow peloton was content to conserve its energy, think about their arrival in Paris in 2 days, and let a small group of glory seekers bid for the day’s win. With the race for overall basically complete and a flatter rolling stage , the script was perfect for an early breakaway.

The day was won by Credit Agricole’s Thor Hushovd, who beat Christophe Mengin (FDJ) and Jacob Piil (CSC) in the final sprint, after Piil blew out of his pedals in the final meters. The trio were part of the predictable break that escaped after 4 km, included 7 other riders, and gained up to 11 minutes on the road.

The main bunch was led in by Robbie McEwan, who took a fierce sprint over Erik Zabel and also the sprinters green jersey by 1 point. The green jersey race will surely be decided on the Champs d’Ellysees on Sunday, and is pretty much the only thing we have left to look forward to.
