What's Cool In Road Cycling

Sun Tour Diary: Ride With iTeamNova’s Dave Macca

Day 1 Herald Sun Tour – 33km Melbourne – “I always feel a bit nervous starting a race back in Australia. I guess it is expectations more than anything. People think that because you are a pro in Europe you should win everything and the domestic riders tend to target you as a rider to watch.”

However, with the bad comes the good….a fantastic sunny day in downtown Lygon Street, the Italian capital of Melbourne and a 10,000 plus crowd cheering us on.

We knew Drewie (Jamie Drew) had good form after his 2nd place in the recent 270km Melbourne to Warrnambool and the whole team was keyed up.

The stage was going to be a frantic 30 laps of a 1.1 km circuit.

Riding under the Jayco banner for the Austalian tour, the team were active all race, with one of the guys going with every move. Eventually the aggressive riding paid off with Drewie going with the winning break of three. Scott Guyton and I were well placed to slow the peloton down and the break went out to a winning margin.

Drewie looked comfortable for the whole race and started his sprint 100 metres out. Unfortunately he came up on the inside of American Mike Sayers and with lack of space between the barricades and Sayers he ran himself into a dead end. Sayers profiting from the tactical error, went on to win the stage.

However, all in all a good start. The team showed we have the form to be reckoned with and Drewie is fired up to avenge the stage.

Tomorrow we are off to Portarlington for a 10 lap kermess over the former Australian National Championship course. This course has a nasty hill in it that will be telling after 10 laps. Let’s hope we’re in the yellow after this one!
