What's Cool In Road Cycling

Team Lampre Detained By French Police

– Reported By Team Lampre –
Yesterday afternoon after Paris-Tour, the 9th trial of cycling World Cup, ten members of Lampre-Daikin Cycling Team have been accompanied by an extraordinary number of means to Tours’ Gendarmerie. After being heard as “people informed about facts” in the so-called “Rumsas’ case”, they could come back home after six hours. Four of them (masseurs and mechanics) had already been examined on Monday, July 29th, 2002. The team vehicles’ perquisition was unsuccessful.

-The day after this spectacular intervention, Lampre-Daikin team wants to define precisely what follows:

-1. The team has arranged for suspending Raimondas Rumsas since the first hours after Mrs Edita Rumsas’ arrest which took place on Sunday, July 28th, 2002.

-2. Managers and team members have immediately showed their collaboration towards French authorities even if they weren’t directly involved in “Rumsas’ case”.

-3. The team’s complete serenity is proved by its presence in many races that took place in French territory after the Tour de France. The team points out that seven of the nine riders who raced the last Tour the France have come back in France since Friday, September 13th to take part in the Paris-Bruxelles and GP de Fourmies, but they had never been contacted by the Court. We refer to Belohvosciks, Bertogliati, Cortinovis, Dierckxsens, Pagliarini, Pinotti and Serpellini.

-Few days later Belohvosciks and Bertogliati partook in the GP des Nations on Saturday, September 21st.

-4. As for last weekend’s transfer, Lampre-Daikin team’s members would have been glad to help the Court since last Saturday if they had asked them to do it.

-Although it confirms its greatest respect for the Judges’s work and for Police authorities, Lampre-Daikin Cycling Team can’t avoid notice that formalities, times and the seat of yesterday’s “blitz” seem to be curiously orchestrated to obtain a great media visibility on an international level.

– Everything happened few weeks after the diffusion of inexact and seriously defamatory news referred to a presumed recovery of doping-products on the team’s camper on July 29th, 2002. As for that, the team makes a right precise statement: any doping-products have never been found in the team’s vehicles. The sequestrated medicines are completely lawful. Some of them – the so-called products with “restrictions on use” – were accompanied by their medical certificates.

-The image damage to the Cycling Team, to Sponsors, to athletes and to the staff – that have nothing to do with Mrs Rumsas’ case – is obvious.

-Considering what has been said and written in last hours, Lampre-Daikin Cycling Team invites all the journalists to the greatest objectivity. As a matter of fact, some completely baseless news with defamatory contents have been published. The Cycling Team will treat these news as objects of legal actions.

-In the end, Lampre-Daikin thanks the numerous voices that have defended it and condemned this disputable case of “justice-spectacle”.
