– Reported by Datasport.it –

Today’s 175 kilometer stage was won my Super Mario Cipollini while another Italian, Paolo Bettini of the Quick Step team took the lead in the GC due to time bonuses won during the stage. The Tuscan rider from Domina Vacanza-Elitron beat out the evergreen Erik Zabel and Dario Pieri on the run in.

Bettini took the first bonus sprint in San Gemini Fonte and overcame his deficit to overnight leader Fillipo Pozzato from the Fassa Bortolo squad. Four stages remain in the ‘Race of the Two Seas’ with tommorow’s stage finishing on the 20% climb to Ortezzano.

“This time last year I had only won one race,” Cipollini commented. “This year it’s good to have two wins in three days wearing the world champion’s jersey, with Milan-San Remo only one week away.”
