What's Cool In Road Cycling

Bettini’s Attack Pays Off !

2nd Stage Tirreno-Adriatico

Quite a stage for the riders today, and at 213 km – the longest stage of the race from Sorrento to Frosinone.
Lots of action all day with many changes at the head of the group. Active at the front were Saeco for Di Luca, Lampre for Svorada, and in last 4 kms Telekom for Zabel.
With 3 kms to go, Bettini (Mapei) and Freire (Mapei) attacked a little hill, where the road was at 6-7%.
They held a 50 metres advantage, and at last 300 metres, Bettini sprinted to a the win of 2″ over Zabel (Telekom) and Leoni (Alessio).
Overall rankings: leader Zabel, 2nd is Bettini at 5″ and 3rd position for Freire at 9″.
Tomorrow there will be the hardest stage, from Anagni to Rocca di Cambio, with many hills, and we will see who really wants to win Tirreno 2002.
Best wishes to Wadecki after yesterday’s crash(Domo-Farm Frites).

Bettini:”I talked with Oscar (Freire) about the attack, because we knew there was a dangerous downhill in the final. We didn’t decided to go for the win, but just to attack.
At 300 metres I saw the group behind us, and so I went again.
I must say thank to Oscar for his help.
Now I’m happy, because I showed my condition for the next classics.
About the final ranking? If tomorrow I will be with the firsts, than I can think at the final ranking.
I got a victory, and so it’s ok. Without pressure.”
