What's Cool In Road Cycling

USAPCC’13 St.2: Photo Report!

After another exhausting day for both the cyclists and photographers alike, Darrell Parks had just enough energy left to send us these superb pics of what was another exciting stage at the USA Pro Challenge in Colorado.

Many outrageous cycling contraptions can be found on the KOM’s. This lad had his hands full keeping this one upright.

The immense size of the peloton and race caravan is dwarfed by the huge valley and giant conifers. This image was taken from far above and about 1 kilometer from the KOM. The peloton still had about 5 kilometers to go from this point.

Costumed fans run alongside the riders in the break as they near Independence Pass. Most riders are not happy with this type of activity…..

This scenic of the peloton, taken about one kilometer from Independence Pass, was captured with a remote controlled camera. I sometimes use remotes to gain a different perspective of the race from the same location, especially if the course has limited access to shooting in numerous locations.

After the race crested the pass the KOM Crazies decided to have a dance party in the middle of the road holding up traffic. The local police had to stop the music to get them to allow the traffic to start moving again.

Lachlan Morton, Mathias Frank, and Lawson Craddock are the first to arrive on the circuit in Breckenridge. Frank would take the stage, Morton the yellow jersey while Craddock nearly crashed out as he took the final turn and rode off the course.

The main GC group enters Breckenridge with about a 30 second deficit to the 3 leaders. Surprisingly this group also contains the yellow jersey of Peter Sagan who somehow managed to end up on the podium.

Mathias Frank screams onto the finish straight with no one even close behind.

Lachlan Morton is the second to exit the final KOM loop. This feat ensures the Yellow Jersey will be his.

Frank takes it by a mile.

The riders that made it onto the podium also got free “Fur hats with horns” gifts.

The crowds were out in force at the end of the stage in Breckenridge.
