Rafa Casero Takes Stage 2 Of The Vuelta A La Comunidad Valenciana And New Leader

Brother of Angel Casero, Rafa, to-day went with the early break, on this the second stage. He stayed away for the best win of his career and moves into the overall lead.

To-days stage was were Kelme would show that they would’nt miss there stars from last year, it did’nt turn out that way!

Casero (Paternina), Cuenca (Kelme) and Mateos (ibanesto.com) moved off the front early, the bunch were not very interested and rolled along letting them gain over 7 minutes.

By the second time over the Alto de Tudons (1,020 metres), it was Rafa Casero on his own with an advantage of 3.15 from what was left of the main group, about 20 riders. Kivilev of Cofidis tried over the top, but was pulled back on the snow lined descent. Casero lost about 20 seconds by the bottom and had 15 kilometres to go.

Rabobank were doing most of the work until 10 to go as they passed through the village of Finistrat. Then Milaneza took over for there sprinter Edo, Rafa still had 1.52 in hand. He was at 5 kms, the maingroup, now about 30 riders, were at 6, about 1 minute 30 behind.

He turned on to the road along the port of La Vila-Joijosa into a head-wind, but that was’nt going to slow him, he still had 41 seconds and the smile on his face said it all. He took the stage, overall, points, mountains and combine jerseys, not a bad days work.

Tomorrow, stage 3 is from Onda to Port de Sagunt (157 kilometres), three bigish climbs, downhill finish again.
