Pinotti Takes Stage 4 And Valverde Keeps The Overall In Vuelta Al Pais Vasco

Yesterday young Irishman, Dermot Nally (Paternina) tried his luck in a group break, to-day it was a two up break, it succeeded, but not for him.

126 riders headed out of Vitoria, in warm weather, to-day on stage 4 to Santesteban, a distance of 171 kilometres. At 34 kilometres, that Irishman Dermot Nally (Paternina) with Marco Pinotti (Lampre) attacked, and by the Alto de Zuarrarrate (2nd. cat) had 10 minutes.

Things started to hot up behind at 88 kilometres when Euskaltel and Fassa Bortolo started to chase.

On the climb of Saldias, at 119 kilometres, Pinotti was on his own, a minute in front of Nally, the bunch at 5 minutes 10 seconds. Nally was caught at 145 kilometres, Pinotti stayed clear to the finish. Alejandro Valverde of Kelme was second and held onto his overall lead.

Tomorrow is the 5th. and last day, split into 2 stages. The first is 91 kilometres from Santesteban to Fuenterrabia with 3 climbs. The second a time trial of 13 kilometres round Fuenterrabia.

1st. M.Pinotti (LAM) 4:07:43.
2nd. A.Valverde (KEL) at 3 secs.
3rd. A.Vicioso (ONCE) same time.
4th. D.Rebellin (GER) same time.
5th. M.Kessler (TEL) same time.
6th. W.Belli (LAM) same time.

Overall After Stage 4:

1st. A.Valverde (KEL) 16:19:51.
2nd. D.Rebillin (GER) same time.
3rd. A.Vicioso (ONCE) same time.
4th. D.Etxebarria (EUS) same time.
5th. I.Mayo (EUS) same time.
6th. I.Astarloa (SAE) same time.
