What's Cool In Road Cycling

Vuelta Stage 19: It’s ibanesto.com again!

On an up and down profile, like today’s, it was either going to be stalemate or action from the main protagonists on overall. Roberto Heras needs more time over his rivals, and the others don’t want to lose any more to him, very simple really.

At the start Roberto Heras is asked about the time trial on Sunday, he said he feels very optimistic as it’s a very special time trial, it’s on the last day and everyone is tired and anything could happen. He is quite confident of keeping his leadership.

At only 7 kilometres from the start a group of nine riders broke away over the first climb of the Alto De La Hoya. First was Osa (BAN), 2nd. Rebollo (REL), 3rd. Garcia Quesada (KEL), they were followed over by Garcia Acosta (BAN), Serrano (ONC), Caucchioli (ALS), Lavarinhas (MIL), Atienza (COF) & Martin Perdiguero (AQC).

They were to reach a maximum of 8 minutes 27 seconds by the 94 kilometre mark, then at 100 kilometres US Postal and Coast take control of the bunch to close the gap as they start to climb the Puerto De Serranillos. With 4 kilometres to the top Joseba Beloki (ONCE) attacks the peleton, but to no avail, he can’t gain any gap. Up front at 126 kilometres Chente (full name Josй Vincente) Garcia Acosta of ibanesto.com goes for it on his own, with 50 kilometres and the climb of the Puerto De Navalmoral between him and the finish line. His hard riding keeps him in front all the way to the finish were he is still 2 minutes ahead of Aitor Gonzбlez (Kelme) who takes 4 seconds back from Heras and all the other top men.

This was ibanesto.com’s fourth stage victory in this Vuelta and Chente’s second in all the Vueltas he has riden, the first in 1997, and a stage in the Tour de France in 2000, but their highest on overall is Pablo Lastras in 17th. place over 15 minutes down, come back Big Mig, we need you!

Well! I’m off to Madrid in the morning to see the stage finish in the Warner Bros. Park and the time trial on Sunday, should be a great weekend & more ”distraccions” for you.
