Vuelta Stage 5: New Leader, But Still ONCE In Charge

The day started with a group of seven men who tried to get a head start before the big climb & the big guns got going. But they were allways going to get caught.

Saeco to-day were very active, seting things up for, at first, Simoni and then a late attack by Di Luca, which was too late, as the race was up the road by that time. It was all wasted energy from one of the strongest teams. It was them that pulled front men back.

The main group all looked at each other when Fйlix Garcia Casas (Big Mat) and Guido Trentin (Cofidis) jumped off up the hill with 7 kilometres to the top. Only Sevilla (Kelme) & Jaksche (ONCE) showed any interest. The main group of all the stars came over the line in ones and twos, Heras (USP) and last years winner Casero (Coast) lost a little time. Birthday boy (32) Oscar Camenzind lost some time, but not a bad result for an old-un.

Mikel Zarrabeitia managed to stay ahead of the others to take the leaders jersey, other big winners of the day: Sevilla, Jaksche, Vinokourov and Trentin, losers Beloki and Cipollini still not been seen. Sorry 184th.

Bigest loser Roberto Laiseka of Euskaltel with head injuries.

Yesterday’s stage 4, from Aguilas to Roquetas De Mar, was watched by 2 million Spanish people on TV live, this figure is for the National station TVE and does not include satelite viewers.

To-day the city of Granada signed a contract as start town for the 2005 Vuelta Espaсa. The city first hosted a finish in 1935 and many times since, the last time, Guidi won the stage there in 1995.

Rider Comments:
Cipollini: “For the 2 victories at this Vuelta I must say thanks at my team-mates, they did a wonderful job. But Sunday I’ll leave to prepare for the World Championship
in Zolder”.

Casagrande: “Today I had a bad moment for some kms, and I couldn’t reply to the sprint of Sevilla . But in the last 3-4 kms I found myself and I finished with the group of the best. At the moment my condition isn’t at max, but I’m hoping to find it day by day”.
