Asia against Europe: 15 International Teams Registered for the Race Horizon Park 2017
On May 26-28, the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, will for the sixth time host a series of international cycling races – Race Horizon Park (three one-day races of the 1.2 category). This year, applications have been filed by 15 international teams from 11 countries, including Azerbaijan, Belarus, Germany, Denmark, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Serbia, the USA and the Czech Republic. Team registration for Horizon Park Race for Peace, Horizon Park Race Maidan and Horizon Park Classic will last till the 10th of May. Hence, other foreign and Ukrainian teams still have one month to register for participation if the traditional Kyiv races.
Nevertheless, one can already build a picture of the key rivalry that will take place in the last weekend of May in the central streets of Kyiv. With two teams from Azerbaijan, Synergy Baku Cycling Project and Lokomotiv Cycling Team, and Kazakhstan’s Vino – Astana Motors, three teams at a time will represent Asia and are not going to yield to the pressure of outnumbering European teams. Furthermore, Synergy Baku Cycling Project, one of the brightest teams of the continental division, will bring its leaders – Kirill Pozdnyakov, ex-Ukrainian Maksym Averin and Samir Jabrayilov, who more than once stood on podiums of Ukrainian races, while Vino – Astana Motors will be represented in Kyiv by Oleg Zemliakov, one of the most promising young racers in Kazakhstan.
“It’s always a pleasure for our team to come to Ukraine and specifically to Kyiv,” – says Susan Westermeyer, press manager of the Azeri Synergy Baku Cycling Project. “Last year, we performed well at the Tour of Ukraine and the Grand Prix of Vinnytsia but failed to produce good results at Race Horizon Park. We hope that this year, we’ll manage to throw down a challenge to the Ukrainian team Kolss-BDC and other strong teams.” The Ukrainian-Polish team from Kyiv managed by Mykola Skorenko has won all races of Race Horizon Park without exception since 2013, but Kolss-BDC is not the only European team that will compete with Synergy Baku Cycling Project for places on the podium.
Belarusian team Minsk Cycling Club will as usual come to Kyiv strongly motivated. The cycling club from the capital of Belarus plans to take along not only strong sprinter Siarhei Papok and known universal racer Kanstantsin Klimiankou, but also Ukrainian racer Oleksandr Golovash, who previously performed for Kolss-BDC. Furthermore, the team includes Stanislau Bazhkou, who is in a perfect shape this season and can show his best on uneven terrain. With such a line-up and support from the Belarusian national team, also registered to take part, Minsk Cycling Club can fight for the victory in each race. The same refers to the strong Italian club GM Europa Ovini. This year, the Italians managed to celebrate a victory in the difficult one-day race GP Adria Mobil in Slovakia, and took the third place in the team standing in the Croatian staged race Istrian Spring Trophy.
In addition, in the list of the registered teams one should pay attention to regional team Veloclub Ratisbona from Germany, Serbs from CCN Metalac and U.S. Team Novo Nordisk, featuring only athletes suffering from diabetes mellitus. Such a strong and early interest from abroad cannot but make happy the Race Horizon Park organiser and the Cycling Federation of Ukraine President Alexander Bashenko: “When we started five years ago, we had to convince teams to come to Kyiv. Now, Race Horizon Park is a reputable brand in the cycling world, so, many teams of the continental division literally seek to take part specifically in our races.”
With such a record-high pace of team registration, the organising committee of Race Horizon Park does not rule out a record-high number of participants this year. In this connection, the organisers call upon Ukrainian teams who have not accomplished the formalities yet and not registered to hurry to file applications and not to wait till the 10th of May.
