BMC Development Team’s Success Continues

Loic Vliegen’s overall victory Sunday at Triptyque Ardennais was the latest in a string of successes for the BMC Development Team.

Always Taking Responsibility
In its second season, General Manager Rik Verbrugghe’s squad has already scored more than half-a-dozen wins highlighted by overall victory at Tour de Normandie with Stefan Küng, a stage win at the Tour de Bretagne with Dylan Teuns and a solo victory by Ignazio Moser at Memorial Lorenzo Mola. “We are pleased with our performances and results, but more importantly, our riders are getting valuable experience to get them to the next level,” Verbrugghe said. “It is also nice to see the BMC Development Team is now regularly regarded as a contender wherever and whenever we race.” Verbrugghe said Teuns, who was runner-up in the Under 23 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, is one of many riders on the team with great potential. “He was the strongest rider in the race in Bretagne but was second in the overall because the winner (Bert-Jan Lindeman) was faster in the sprint,” Verbrugghe said. “But we still rode like the team of the leader, taking responsibility on the front, as we often do.”

Busy Race Calendar
Next on the BMC Development Team’s race calendar is the Course de la Paix U23 (May 30-June 1) in Czechoslovakia and the Under 23 version of Paris-Roubaix (June 1). The French stage race Ronde de l’oise (June 12-15) is next, followed by three one-day races in Belgium: Romsée-Stavelot-Romsée (June 17), Fléche Ardennaise (June 22) and IWT Oetingen (June 25). Verbrugghe said he envisions many more riders following in the footsteps of Silvan Dillier. The Swiss Under 23 national road and time trial champion won the Tour de Normandie last year for the BMC Development Team, then earned a pro contract with the BMC Racing Team and went on to win a stage of the Tour of Alberta. “We know from his successful transition to the BMC Racing Team, that this is a bona fide way to development riders for the future,” Verbrugghe said. “I appreciate the support sponsor Andy Rihs and BMC Switzerland have provided us, along with the support and encouragement of everyone at the BMC Racing Team.”
