BMC Racing Team Signs Peter Velits

The BMC Racing Team announced the signing Friday of reigning Slovakian time trial champion Peter Velits.

Big Asset For Grand Tours
The 28-year-old finished third at the 2010 Vuelta a España and won the overall at the Tour of Oman last year. He was also part of the Omega Pharma-Quick Step squad that defeated the BMC Racing Team by three seconds to win the inaugural world team time trial championship last September. In addition to winning his second straight national time trial title in June, he was runner-up on Stage 1 of Vuelta al Pais Vasco in April and third on Stage 4 of Paris-Nice in March. “Everyone knows that the BMC Racing Team is one of the best teams – not only with the riders, but also the staff and the equipment,” he said. “So I am really happy that I can join the team for next season. Velits said he has a singular goal for 2014. “I just want to get better,” he said. “I want to grow as a rider and, with this team, it’s going to be possible because I can learn new methods of training and working with new equipment. I don’t have any specific goal that I want to win this race or that race. I just want to really grow as a rider.” BMC Racing Team President/General Manager Jim Ochowicz said Velits will be a big asset in the grand tours and other one-week stage races. “Peter has a deep background in the sport at multiple levels,” Ochowicz said. “In particular, he will add power to the team as a skilled time trialist and climbing expert.” Specific terms of Velits’s contract are not being disclosed.
