Clean podium sweep for RusVelo girls
The final event of the Russian track championships for endurance specialists turned out a remarkable success for RusVelo women’s team riders. Anastasia Chulkova, World champion in 2012, won the points race (55 points) lapping the field twice and adding to it 15 sprint points, including 5 for the final sprint. Aleksandra Burchenkova (47p) took second with two laps and 7 sprint points to her name; and to round it all off, Elena Kuchinskaya (41p) occupied the third step of the podium with one lap of advantage and a whole of 21 sprint points, far more than any other rider in this race managed to pick up.
Mikhail Rostovtsev, RusVelo DS: “We set it as a goal, to win all medals of this event. If you have a chance to take it all, go for it, that’s our philosophy. At the briefing we outlined the tactics, I broke the lineup into pairs and everybody was given free hands; the situation in the race though made the girls to put in corrections on the go, which they did perfectly. It was a piece of what I’d call men-style racing, with high average and a lot of contact. Oxana Kozonchuk got boxed in and suffered a rather heavy fall, still he managed to get to the finish line, making the top 6.”
Anastasia Chulkova, twice a champion in St Petersburg: “I’m happy for RusVelo and happy with my own performance, which proved even better than I expected. I ought to thank the girls for controlling the chasing pack perfectly in both events I won, and I feel satisfied with the fact that I didn’t let them down. There’s no talking about the top form as yet though, with the Track World’s, the absolute highlight of the winter season, still looming in a month’s time.”
Aleksandra Burchenkova, a winner of two medals at these nationals: “ RusVelo was a clear favorite of the event: we had numbers, experience and excellent team work on our side. We simply had to win this in a big way. As to my own tactics, it was pretty straightforward, to lap the pack as many times as possible, the girls contested the sprints while I didn’t.”
