Collarbone Surgery Successful for Dunbar

Irish Under 23 national road champion Eddie Dunbar said surgery to repair his broken collarbone went well and the Axeon Hagens Berman Cycling Team rider expects to be back to training in a few days.

Dunbar broke his right collarbone in a crash Wednesday while training near his home in Banteer, Ireland. He underwent surgery at the Santry Sports Clinic in Dublin on Friday.

“They looked after me very well,” Dunbar said Saturday. “The care and facilities there were brilliant. It has been more than 24 hours since the surgery and my collarbone feels OK. I have good movement back in it and the pain has gone down quite a bit.”

Because Dunbar’s collarbone was fractured in several places, doctors inserted a metal plate to hold it together. Last year at about this same time, Dunbar fractured his left collarbone in a crash at the Tour de Yorkshire.

The 19-year-old said he expects to be back on his Specialized S-Works Tarmac on a trainer Monday and spin for 15 or 20 minutes.

“If it feels OK, I will progress a bit more each day and then hopefully be on the road in just over a week,” he said.

Before his crash, Dunbar had helped Axeon Hagens Berman win the team classification at the Volta ao Alentejo in Portugal. He was also was part of the team last Saturday as Logan Owen soloed to win the Under 23 edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
