Dehaes: “Throw my wheel first on the line”

Wanty-Groupe Gobert heads to the Belgian Championship in Antwerp (25/06) with 11 riders. Frederik Backaert, Jérôme Baugnies, Thomas Degand, Kenny Dehaes, Tom Devriendt, Xandro Meurisse, Robin Stenuit, Guillaume Van Keirsbulck, Kévin Van Melsen, Pieter Vanspeybrouck and Frederik Veuchelen compete on a flat course for the Belgian title. Kenny Dehaes made of this race a main goal this year. A preview by our sprinter from Deinze.

Kenny Dehaes: “It was very hot in Halle-Ingooigem. I am not really resistant to such an extreme heat. The legs felt good however. But I am happy that they predict less hot weather on Sunday.”

“A championship is always a special race. It is important to stay alert. On the two cobbled sections, you can lose the race, by having a flat tire or being placed badly. I certainly do not expect a mass sprint in Antwerp, rather a sprint with a small group. I do not see a big favorite, so there is no team to control the bunch all day. We must definitely keep an eye on riders like Van Avermaet, Gilbert and Naesen and be alert when they accelerate. Our team must be offensive, but also save energy for the final. ”

“I wanted to train some more after Halle-Ingooigem, but had doping control and had to wait another two hours. I’m not afraid of the distance on Sunday. I have enough miles in the legs from the past races. I also did not suffer from cramps, which sometimes occurs to me in the heat. The legs are good. I hope to be in front on Sunday and if all the puzzle pieces fall together, throw my wheel first on the line.”

Wanty-Groupe Gobert also participates in national championships in four other countries.
