Elena Cecchini triumphs in Luxembourg

Italian champion Elena Cecchini won the second stage of the Festival Elsy Jacobs on Saturday. Together with three others she could just stay ahead to sprint for the victory in Garnich. She beat Lucinda Brand. Amanda Spratt got third, Janneke Ensing fourth. Cecchini ended her first part of the season in Luxembourg.

Elena Cecchini: “It was a hard local lap on Saturday of almost ten kilometres and luckily it was dry. All riders of our team were riding in the front, we were in every attack. With two laps to go I followed Lucinda Brand when she attacked with two other girls. The main teams were represented in that breakaway. We took about 45 seconds lead, but with two kilometres to go nobody wanted to pull anymore. I got a bit scared that we would still be caught, but we just managed to sprint for the victory. I didn’t believe I could beat Brand. I am really glad I did and that I could give this win to the team. I want to thank my teammates for their trust in me. I had already achieved different top ten results this season and was waiting for the win to come. It’s great to end the spring this way.”

“I had never raced here before, but the girls told me it would suit me. I like races that don’t end with a bunch sprint, but were there is a lot of fighting to get away and a small group gets to the finish line. Ideally on a technical and hilly course, so this race was perfect. Now I will take a few days rest and then I’ll leave for an altitude training camp in Livigno for two to three weeks to prepare the second part of the season. I will get back in competition on Friday 29th May in the Boels Rental Hills Classic.”
