What's Cool In Road Cycling

History for Team Wanty-Groupe Gobert

Marco Minnaard won the final general classification in Rhône-Alpes Isère Tour (2.2, 3-6/05). Our Dutch rider retained his lead in the GC during the final stage between Saint-Maurice-l’Exil and Charvieu-Chavagneux on Saturday. A historic day for Wanty-Groupe Gobert since it is the first time ever a rider brings home an overall stage race victory.

Marco Minnaard: “The beginning of the stage was ideal, as the most dangerous man in the break was 8 minutes behind in the general classification. The breakaway riders also took away the bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints. Thus our team just had to control the bunch. That is what we did until the last GPM where the attacks started. In the final of the stage we managed the offensive well until the finish.”

“I had some doubts about possible gaps on the line, but once the official confirmation of my overall victory arrived it was fantastic! The team rode 200% for me, that causes an incredible sensation. I am not used to winning, I never dreamed of winning a stage race!”

“The team keeps growing, and me too! I feel stronger every year, especially thanks to the altitude camps. I hope this will continue. This victory is a confirmation of my progression, because I could never have achieved this a few years ago. Now I will take some rest before resuming in Tour du Jura at the end of this month.”
