Lotto Belisol: Bart De Clercq debuts in the Tour

Bart De Clercq is one of the nine Lotto Belisol riders that are selected for the upcoming Tour de France. He’s the only debutant in the team. The nearly 27-year-old rider started his pro career in 2011 at our team and that year he immediately won a stage in the Giro: the 7th stage with finish on the Montevergine di Mercogliano. Last year he participated in the Giro again and he rode the Vuelta for the first time, he became 17th in the GC.

Bart De Clercq: “It’s an honour for me to be selected for the Tour de France, after all it’s the most important race on the calendar. From the moment you become pro, you hope to ever be riding the Tour. It definitely gives me confidence that the team lets me start here. I’m going to give me for the full hundred percent. At the moment it’s still quiet here in Corsica, there’s not that many press yet, but of course the big rush still has to come.”

“First of all my task will be to work for the team; for the GC of Jurgen Van den Broeck and for a stage win of André Greipel. Of course it’s possible that I get in a break in the more mountainous stages. There are possibilities where an escape can survive, it’s the skill to be part of it. We have to see how the race develops. If I’m in the attack that’s also good for Van den Broeck and if the break makes it to the end – if there are no men that are dangerous for the GC riders – I can take my chance. For the rest I hope to be able to assist Van den Broeck as long as possible in the mountains.”
