Lotto Belisol: Preview Giro: First Grand Tour for Kenny Dehaes

Kenny Dehaes is the last one to give his preview of the Giro d’Italia which starts tomorrow in Napoli. He’s going to be the man for the sprints at Lotto Belisol. It’s the first Grand Tour for Dehaes and that brings a healthy dose of nervousness. In the bunch sprints he’ll compete against riders like Mark Cavendish, Matt Goss and Daniele Bennati. But also the French champion Nacer Bouhanni, John Degenkolb, Oscar Gatto and Sacha Modolo are starting.

Kenny Dehaes: “This Giro will be my first Grand Tour ever and that is of course special. It’s something totally new. I have only ridden smaller stage races, so three weeks Giro d’Italia seems very big. This makes me a bit nervous. I have only ridden one race in Italy in my career. I’ll see how I react after more than one week of racing, how my body copes with it. But I look forward to this adventure 100%. And I have some experienced guys with me, who’ll advise me.”

“I want to sprint in the flat stages and of course I hope to finish as high as possible in them. I have to wait and see how it all goes, a bunch sprint in a Grand Tour is always different. I’ll see how I can maintain myself and if the succession of race days will have an influence, will it affect my speed or not. In Mallorca I beat different top sprinters earlier this year, so I’m not afraid. My goal is to get a top five, that is realistic, and every place higher is a nice extra. If I can play along in the bunch sprints and can finish, my Giro will be a success.”
