Lotto Belisol: Valérie D’haeze takes part in Ride2Barca for Think-Pink
Ride2Barca is a project in which ten women will ride from Ghent to Barcelona in 16 days, one of them is Valérie D’haeze. She’s responsible for logistics and administration at Lotto Belisol. The women trained 7 months for this adventure, Wednesday their journey to Spain starts at about half past eight on the Sint-Baafsplein. Thursday 29th of August they’ll arrive in Barcelona. They all got the assignment to collect 2500 euro each for Think-Pink, the Belgian permanent awareness making campaign in the battle against breast cancer. At the moment they have an amount of more than 53.500, you can still donate until 22nd of September.
Ride2Barca is an initiative of Ladies Fun Ride, that wants to boost recreational women’s cycling in Flanders and organizes several initiatives to do so. In 2011 they started with Ride2Rome, last year it was the first edition of Ride2Barca. On the 24th of August Le Tour en Rose takes place. Sympathizers could enroll to climb the Tourmalet that day together with the 10 ladies of Ride2Barca.
Valérie D’haeze, head logistics and administration Lotto Belisol: “We were with about 35 candidates to take part in Ride2Barca and after screening of the sportive ambitions and motivation ten were selected. The sportive challenge immediately appealed to me, I’ve been cycling already for many years. We’re with a diverse group of women, in age and cycling experience. As preparation we rode several cyclosportive tours, like the Tour of Flanders and Amstel Gold Race. A week ago I trained in the Vosges. It will be the first time that we sit on a bike 16 days long.”
“My grandmother died of breast cancer, that’s why I have such a connection with this project. My mother, aunt, sister and me have to be screened extra because of our family history. So it is an issue in my living environment. Breast cancer happens to one out of nine women. You know why you’re doing this. The money we raise will go via Think-Pink to Share Your Care. The more we collect, the more breast cancer patients we can give a moment of diversion. It can be that someone gives them a hand in their household or that they are able to make a family excursion.”
“On the website Ride2Barca, where you’ll also be able to follow our journey, you can go to the overview of the participants and then click on ‘Steun Valérie’ (‘Support Valérie’). The fundraising mainly happens through donations, that money comes directly into the account of the organization. I have also sold marshmallows. Up till now I already collected more than 4000 euro. We pay our own travel expenses and the entire profits of the action go to Think-Pink.”
