What's Cool In Road Cycling

Ovechkin among the fastest in stage one of the Tour of Slovenia

The 21st edition of 2.1 Tour of Slovenia opened with 8.8 km time trial held in the country’s capital Ljubljana. Artem Ovechkin, RusVelo’s specialist of races against the clock, set the seventh best time, 16 seconds down on the recent Giro d’Italia sensation Michael Matthews.

The RusVelo rider said:
The profile was flat, and a couple of turns in the final kilometer didn’t change the race’s character for me – it was all about sheer speed. And I’m not quite at my best in this department as yet. After the Tour de Luxembourg, I did a few motor-paced workouts directed exactly at this, and I see the positive signs. The ITT course here is all different from the one on which the medals of Russian pro champs will be won or lost, and that race will be an absolute highlight for me. Notwithstanding that, I’ll try my luck at the general classification here in Slovenia. Tomorrow will be a good climbing test, we’ll have a Cat 1 climb some 40 km from the finish, not close enough to make the final selection, but it will be long enough to tell me what I’m capable of.”
