Partnership Team KATUSHA ALPECIN and Dutch Topcompetition

Team KATUSHA ALPECIN announces a partnership with the Dutch Topcompetition. The Swiss WorldTour team rewards the winner of the Wattmeister Challenge with a genuine internship. “Wattmeister” is the title of the rider reaching the highest wattage per kilogram in 2017 on a smart trainer device. The winner of this “new” classification in the Topcompetition is offered an internship that starts from August 1st until the end of 2017.

The Topcompetition is a cycling league with eight Dutch races – starting with Ster van Zwolle, March 4th – for men at semi-professional level. The final winner is guaranteed a contract at the Procontinental Team Roompot – Nederlandse Loterij. The Wattmeister is allowed to wear the red jersey in the races. That jersey can only be attacked by the Topcompetition riders on a smart trainer device (Tacx Neo) under the auspices of specialized exercise physiologist.

“We were immediately charmed by this initiative. It is original but also ground-breaking. The participants will be highly motivated to become a trainee/stagiair in Team KATUSHA ALPECIN and, as the Wattmeister will be rider of one of the 17 Topcompetion teams, we know that it will be a rider with experience. I really look forward to this initiative. In just two weeks we can see the first results. I am curious,” said José Azevedo, General Manager of Team KATUSHA ALPECIN. The team is eager to add another Dutch talent to their selection alongside Dutchman Maurits Lammertink.

Initiator of the Dutch Topcompetition and creator of the Wattmeister Challenge, Flavio Pasquino, is pleased with the current developments. “Bike Brand Canyon was the matchmaker. When I told them about the idea they were immediately excited to step in as a sponsor and also to contact the team management of Team KATUSHA ALPECIN. This is another recognition for our league and now even internationally. Initially we started the Topcompetition to stimulate the flow for semi-pros to turn professional. It works out well for two years in a row with winners Twan Castelijns, now riding for Team LottoNL – Jumbo, and Coen Vermeltfoort who went to Roompot – Nederlandse Loterij.”

On the 1st of March, the Kick Off of the Wattmeister Challenge will be launched in Amsterdam, next to the Velodrome, and open to all public. On the 5th of July, the big final will take place with the 10 best riders out of all competitors throughout the year. Only then will it be decided who runs off with the internship at Team KATUSHA ALPECIN. More info on the Wattmeister Challenge can be found at www.topcompetitie.nu/wattmeister/

The Wattmeister Challenge Kick Off will be broadcast via an internet livestream from 6:45 PM with commentary. Later there will be a summary on Eurosport 1 (The Netherlands and Belgium) integrated in the special of the first Topcompetition roadrace, the Craft Ster van Zwolle, broadcasted on the 11th of March around 6PM, immediately after Paris-Nice.
