What's Cool In Road Cycling

Red Bull Last Stand Returns to Alamo Plaza October 7

The world’s best cyclists will return to San Antonio for a crit race around the iconic American landmark.

WHAT: The return of Red Bull Last Stand will see some of the best cyclists in the world race around Alamo Plaza in a high speed crit race, which is a form of road bike racing consisting of tight laps around a short-closed circuit course. It’s an increasingly popular form of cycling around the world, both for riders and spectators alike.

Red Bull Last Stand kicks the racing into another gear by using the intense “eliminator” format. In this ruthless setup, the rider who crosses the finish line last on each lap gets eliminated until there’s just one rider left taking their final victory lap. This leaves no room for error for the competitors, and for thrilling action down the stretch.

The event will be free for all spectators and will offer spectacular views of the iconic Alamo Plaza, where athletes will be flying around the flat, fast and technical nine-turn, half-mile course at speeds of up to 40mph.

WHO: Hundreds of invited and qualified riders will compete throughout the daylong event, which will consist of four races: Fixed Gear Women, Fixed Gear Men, Geared Women, and Geared Men. There Double Down award will be given to the woman and man who complete the most combined laps in Fixed Gear and Geared races that hold the highest single finish in either discipline.

Last year’s inaugural race was the first time that San Antonio played host to such an athletic competition, and saw some of the best riders in the world, including Addison Zawada, Stefan Rothe and Texas’ own Sammi Runnels, Ash Duban, and Colin Strickland compete. Colin made it a homecoming to remember as he topped the Men’s Fixed Gear podium, and on October 7th he will return to defend the title, along with all the other aforementioned riders.

This year will also see a larger international presence among the competition, including elite riders like Paolo Panzeri from Italy, Jacques Sauvagnargues and Lorna Dudding from the United Kingdom, and Ronnel Hualda from the Philippines. Additionally, Evelyn Sifton, Maxine Hubbard, and Joshua Tyrell will be competing from Canada.

Ronnel Hualda actually earned his way to Texas from the Phillippines by winning a qualifying race, and punching his “Golden Ticket.” This year is the first that the event will feature riders like Ronnel who have won qualifying races that were held throughout the year, from all over the globe. Qualifiers took place in many different locations, from nearby Texas cities like Dallas and Houston to international competitions in Barcelona and London. Now the winners of those various races will try their hand in San Antonio at Red Bull Last Stand, which should ensure the field is even more intensely competitive in year two.
