Saez claims best career result at Tour des Fjords

Second-year professional Hector Saiz earned the best result of his young career today with 3rd place from the winning breakaway at the Tour des Fjords (2.1).

The Caja-Rural Seguros RGA rider was part of the main breakaway of the day which held a six-minute gap for much of the 190km stage. This group managed to hold off the peloton till the end of the race as they battled it out for a sprint between themselves with Van Gestel (Topsort) winning the stage. The team currently lies second overall in the team classification.

Hector Saez: “The race was hard and fast from the beginning. The early breakaway containing my teammate Lasta was no let away by the peloton. Fter the hard climb of the day we finally managed to clip away and I found myself feeling really good today. We rode really hard in the breakaway to try and gain as much time as we could over the bunch. As we came into the finishing circuit we had a huge gap but we kept the tempo high and the group reduced to four riders. I was feeling strong but in the last few kilometres they started attacking me and I had to waste energy closing gaps. I have a bittersweet taste now because I feel like I could have won the stage. On the other hand I am happy because I had been sick the last few months and have been unable to reach my potential. My aim is to be on the final podium or even to win the race if things go right.”
