Sunny King Criterium Crowns Second NCC Race Champs on March 28

Local American Cancer Society Relay for Life Chapter to Benefit

Registration is still open for the Sunny King Criterium, the second stop on the 2014 USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC). Charming Anniston, Alabama, will again play host to the fast Downtown 0.7 mile crit course race on Saturday, March 28th. Racer registration fees will be donated to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life chapter of Calhoun County.

“Over the past 10 years, more than $100,000 has been donated to the American Cancer Society in Anniston,” said Race Director Marilyn Cullinane of Greenville, SC based Start Smart Cycling. “All of Anniston comes together to make this event a memorable experience for the riders; it’s so wonderful that entry fees go back into the community.”

Racers can register through USA Cycling for the Sunny King Criterium at www.SunnyKingCriterium.com Athletes of multiple categories, including Juniors, will be competing for more than $25,000 plus primes over the course of the day in Anniston. Cycling fans around the world will be able to catch all the race day action on the event’s Website via the Sunny King Live Stream, which will be hosted by announcer Brad Sohner.

Carlos Alzate (InCycle-Predator) and Coryn Rivera (UnitedHealthcare) both took consecutive year Pro wins in 2014 on a challenging incline of a straightaway finish. 2014 NCC Individual Champion Erica Allar (Colavita Fine Cooking) took second to Rivera, who took third in the NCC Overalls.

Pro and Elite Men and Women will have the opportunity to race the following morning, Sunday, March 29, in nearby Bains Gap. The 20-mile lap of the Fort McClellan Road Race will feature over 1,700 feet of climbing.

“We are grateful for the continued generous support from Sunny King Automotive and all our sponsors,” continued Cullinane. “This is an exciting building year for a much larger and more prominent weekend of cycling in Alabama next year.”

The Sunny King Criterium on Saturday will be complemented by the adjacent long-running Noble Street Festival, which will feature the Scion Kidz Zone, community restaurants, live music, arts and crafts, and more.
