What's Cool In Road Cycling

The ENDURA Alpen-Traum – ready to start!

At this event, the dream of every road biker is sure to come true: To cross the entire width of the Alps in one day. From Sonthofen in the Allgäu region to Landeck in Tyrol and then to Sulden in the Vinschgau valley, from Germany to Austria and then to Italy. The ride offers participants no less than 252 kilometers/157 miles and 6,078 meters/19,941 feet altitude difference. After the successful premiere last year, riders can line up at the Start again on the 13th of September, 2014.

The hard-core road bikers will climb the 412 meters/1352 feet of altitude from Sonthofen in the Allgäu region up Oberjoch Pass (1,155 meters/3789 feet) right at the start. The ride continues through the Tannheimer Valley before a short descent from Gaicht Pass leads into the Lechtal valley. After this warm-up stretch, things get really steep. Riders have to master a climb of up to 15 % up Hahntennjoch pass (1,894 meters/6214 feet). A steep descent leads into the Inntal valley from Imst to Landeck where the participants of the “short” round (152 kilometers/94 miles) join the race. All of the competitors in this race take two climbs in succession, one up Pillerhöhe pass (1,559 meters/5,115 feet), the other up Reschen Pass (1,507 meters/4944 feet). The long-distance riders’ muscles are likely to feel the 200 kilometers/124 miles they have pedaled, but the highlight still lies ahead: The climb up Stilfser Joch pass (2,757 meters/9045 feet), one of the highest passes in Europe accessible on wheels. The racers still haven’t reached the Finish though, and the Grand Finale is yet to come when they descend into the Vinschgau valley: The final ascent after Sulden in the Ortler range (1,900 meters/6529 feet). Once here, they can refuel at the Pasta party. The Awards Ceremony and the Pictures of the Day will mark the end of a long day for both participants and spectators.

The towns of Sonthofen, Landeck and Sulden along with the organizers, PLAN B Event Company and RoadBIKE – experts in the fields of event organization, routes and refreshments, – will be busy before and during the event to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The primary sponsor is cycling attire maker, ENDURA from Scotland, who will be informing guests about their latest products at the Expo.

750 participants already took part in this unique Alpencross in the first year, with 500 starting in Sonthofen and 250 deciding in favor of the shorter option departing from Landeck. They were well rewarded with an Alpine panorama of unmatched diversity. The breathtaking views, however, were not the only diversion in this ultra-tough competition: Changing weather conditions posed an additional challenge. They ranged from snow on Hahntennjoch pass all the way to brilliant sunshine on Stilfser Joch pass.

Registration for the ENDURA Alpine Dream opens 22 January 2014. Everyone who wants to be sure of getting a race bib should register without delay. The registration form and terms for participation along with all information relating to the ENDURA Alpine Dream are available at www.alpen-traum.com.
