Tour de Pologne: “Pedalling Towards the Sky…”
THE SUN WILL SHINE OVER THE CLIMBING TIME TRIAL ON PASSO PORDOI DEDICATED TO KAROL WOJTYLA CALLED “PEDALANDO VERSO IL CIELO…” – “PEDALLING TOWARDS THE SKY…”
25 July, 2013 – The clock is ticking down to the start of the 70th Tour de Pologne-UCI World Tour from Trentino. The race will take off on Saturday, July 27th with the first stage from Rovereto to Madonna di Campiglio.
In addition to the pro race there is also growing enthusiasm for the time trial climb open to all fans and enthusiasts scheduled for Sunday, July 28th on the legendary ascent to Passo Pordoi which will also be the arrival point for the second stage of the Tour de Pologne, the Marilleva/Val di Sole – Passo Pordoi/Val di Fassa. The climbing time trial will serve as a tantalizing appetizer for the Pordoi super stage.
“Pedalando verso il cielo…” – Pedalling towards the sky…” this is the name given to the climbing time trial for amateurs and cycling tourists ideated by the organizers of the Tour de Pologne to commemorate the late Polish Pope Karol Wojtyla, the much loved and unforgettable John Paul II; a Pope and an extraordinary man who loved sports and the mountains and who came to Trentino and the Dolomites for official visits and vacations.
Fortunately, Pope Wojtyla seems to have brought the sun to the Dolomites and the Tour de Pologne. In fact the weather forecast for Sunday calls for clear skies and temperatures above 30°C, ideal conditions for a day spent in the open air in the mountains pursuing sports and fun. Everyone will get the chance to test their mettle on the ascent to Pordoi and then they can enjoy the spectacle of the professional race live and up close. The pro race will feature plenty of great riders, including the 2103 pink jersey Vincenzo Nibali and the king of the 2012 Tour de France Bradley Wiggins. Between the Pordoi and these champions it’s sure to be quite the show!
The start of the climbing time trial will be French style, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from the intersection with Passo Sella, while the arrival will be located at the top of the Pordoi. The test is a total of 6.3 Km long, with an average incline of 6.6% and stretches of up to 10%.
