Tour of the Gila: First leader’s jersey for Team Novo Nordisk

The Tour of the Gila in New Mexico has started fantastically for Team Novo Nordisk. Chris Williams won two intermediate sprints during the first stage between Silver City and the demanding final climb and will therefore wear the green sprint jersey tomorrow. The second stage will be 122.6 kilometers long with both start and finish in Silver City. 20 kilometers into the “Silver City to Mogollon Road Race”, four man were able to get away from the peloton, including the 31-year-old Australian from Team Novo Nordisk. They were caught only seven kilometers before the finish due to pooled forces of the other teams. Javier Alexis Acevedo from Team Jamis-Hagens Berman won the 148.1 kilometers race after 3:35:05.

The nervous first part of the UCI 2.2 stage race in the South of the United States was overshadowed by several crashes. Among others, the Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team, was involved. The 20-year-old Stephen Clancy from Ireland crashed as well as the 18-year-old youth rider Andrei Strelkov from Russia and the 25-year-old Aaron Perry from New Zealand. ”Luckily, all of the riders were able to continue the race and made it back into the peloton”, said Gleb Groisman, Sport Director of Team Novo Nordisk during the Tour of the Gila.

After the mountain finish yesterday, today’s stage again will not allow for taking a breath. “The final was unimaginably hard”, concludes Pavel Tcherkassonv, Sport Director of Team Novo Nordisk who is in charge of the team in New Mexico together with Groisman. The second stage, “Fort Bayard Inner Loop Road Race”, is 122.6 kilometers long and includes three mountain classification sprints. There will also be point sprints for the green sprint jersey of Chris Williams. One will be before the first climb, another one in the middle of the race.
