What's Cool In Road Cycling

Very Good Time Trial, Scarponi and Niemiec in the Top Ten

Almost perfect performance by Michele Scarponi in the time trial of the 8th stage of Giro d’Italia, 54,8 km from Gabicce Mare to Saltara.

On a hilly course, full of bends especially in the early part, and with a demanding final climb to Saltara, Scarponi (photo) recorded the 10th timing, 53” higher than Dowsett winning one.

The performance is very good, considering that is better than the one by Gesink (-29”), Uran Uran (-55”), Hesjedal (-1’30”) and close to the ones by Wiggins (+43”), Evans (+14”) and Nibali (+32”).

In the overall classification, that is now led by Nibali, Scarponi is 5th at 1’24”.

“It was very complicated to manage the energies on such course, that’s why I’m satisfied for the result – Scarponi said – I think I could pedal very well in the sectors I liked the most, while I had to decrease the speed in Pesaro, whose roads had cobblestones ground, and in the flat part before the final hill.

Climbing to Saltara I spent all the energies, what a effort, but I think I could realize a good performance.
I’m in the top ten in the overall classification, not so bad considering the lost second of Marina di Ascea”.

In the top ten also Niemiec, who’s 9th at 2’44” to Nibali: “I think I did my best, limiting the gap in the flat sector. It was difficult to pedal at 50 km/h, but I managed to do it”.
