Viewing Party for USPro Championships in Chattanooga

Cyclists in South Invited to Special Viewing Party for USPro Championships in Chattanooga Memorial Day Weekend

This Memorial Day weekend, take your bike on a vacation. Southeast Regional Series presented by Stan’s NoTubes (SRS) invites you, and your bike, to join the party on Monday, May 26 in Chattanooga, Tenn. for the 2014 Volkswagen USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships and the U.S. Handcycling Criterium National Championships. Make it a day trip or enjoy events and riding all weekend in the Scenic City and Appalachian Mountains. The best part will be a special viewing party with SRS to watch the best women and men pros battle it out on the road race course for the Stars-and-Stripes jerseys.

The event will crown men’s and women’s national champions in both the road race and time trial. Last year, Tom Zirbel (Boulder, Colo./Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Carmen Small (Durango, Colo./Specialized-Lululemon) won the men’s and women’s time trial championships to earn the Stars-and-Stripes jersey, while Jade Wilcoxson (Talent, Ore./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Freddie Rodriguez (Berkeley, Calif./Jelly Belly Pro Cycling) each topped their respective podiums in the road race.

“It’s really special to have the national championships for the professional cyclists across the U.S. here in the Southeast. Chattanooga is a great cycling community and is so easy to access from all five cities that are hosting the Southeast Regional Series this year. SRS is pleased to be an event sponsor for USPro this year. This allows us to have special access along the Road Race course on Memorial Day and we hope all SRS competitors can join us to watch this incredible event,” said Marilyn Cullinane, SRS Director and owner of Start Smart Cycling based in Greenville, S.C.

SRS is an official Event Partner for this year’s 2014 Volkswagen USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships. SRS will have a cheering zone for the Road Race at Coolidge Park, which sits next to the Tennessee River on The North Shore of Chattanooga. The Road Race course will pass the park on two sides, and it is within walking distance of great restaurants, shops and the new hill climb (see below)! There will also be a big screen TV next to the park on Frazier Avenue so spectators can view the race feed throughout the day.

Yes, the epic ascent of Lookout Mountain is back for the women and men on Road Race day. New for the race this year is the “wall” on the North Shore of Chattanooga up Kent Street, a one-block section of road with grades of up to 20 percent. Just when the peloton thought it could sprint around the city, there’s a sharp, 24% gradient to make the legs scream again. It’s a great place to see the suffering up close, so SRS will have a viewing party near the base of this climb. Look for the SRS tents in Coolidge Park! In addition to the prestigious national championship jerseys, USA Cycling will reward the women’s and men’s champions a one-year loan each of a 2015 Volkswagen GTI, featuring a turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and an available roof rack.

The men’s and women’s Road Races on Memorial Day will begin in downtown Chattanooga (E. MLK Blvd and Market St) with a 5.1-mile start circuit — three circuits for the women and four for the men. The course then takes the riders on a relatively flat run out Broad Street to begin the climb up Ochs Highway. The ascent up Ochs Highway is approximately 2.75 miles and climbs over 1100 feet each lap. The race will pass through Lookout Mountain to Scenic Highway, and return to downtown via Broad Street. Men will complete four laps up the climb, while the women will do two laps. The “long lap” is 16.5 miles in distance.

The men and women will face the Hill Climb on Kent Street on each of the “long laps” as well as on three shorter 5.4-mile finishing circuits. The course will cross the Market Street Bridge and Veterans Bridge each lap, and spectators will see the riders cross through the start/finish line 11 times during the men’s race and eight times during the women’s race.

The Time Trial Championships will once again be held on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend (May 24), held adjacent to the Volkswagen factory outside Chattanooga. Riders will complete two out-and-back runs of 9.5 miles each for a total of 19 miles. The course layout has four turnarounds which will allow spectators to see each rider multiple times. Maps for both the TT and RR courses can be found at the USACycling.org web site – (https://www.usacycling.org/2014/pro-road-time-trial-nationals).

We have some more scoop for you on USPro in Chattanooga. The Friends of Outdoor Chattanooga are still looking for volunteers for the Time Trial and Road Race. This is a great way to score a commemorative T-shirt. If you can donate your time for one of the volunteer shifts, it’s a great way to give back and support your cycling family. We’d love a photo of you in your volunteer T-shirt on race day, and we’ll post it to our Facebook page. Plus, we can enter your name in a drawing for a special prize pack! Visit https://outdoorchattanoogafriends.org/volunteer/ to register as a course marshal. Let’s get all SRS riders involved in a big way this year!

SRS begins in Albany, Ga. the weekend of May 17-18, and concludes September 13-14 with the championships in Greenville, S.C. The series offers points and prizes at each weekend series, but offers award jerseys created by Hincapie Sportswear in three categories for both pro men and women: SRS Overall Champion’s jersey, the green- and- white-striped PEZ Cycling News Sprinter’s Jersey, and the Stan’s NoTubes King of the Mountain/Queen of the Mountain jersey. Teams and individuals can now register for the full series, or individual races. Registration information, the complete SRS schedule and event updates are available online at www.srs-racing.com/.
