Wippert Wins Stage 1 Tour De Taiwan

Wouter Wippert followed up his World Tour victory at Santos Tour Down Under with a powerful win at today’s Stage 1 of Tour de Taiwan. Darren Lapthorne, Travis Meyer, Adam Phelan and Bernard Sulzberger worked cohesively from the gun to control the 52km race.

“The team rode well today making sure no dangerous moves went away and put Wouter in the perfect position for him to utilize his powerful sprint. The win puts the team in a good frame of mind for the next few days,” Tom Southam, Sports Director, said.

A three man break got away just before the final intermediate sprint. Lapthorne quickly went to the front of the peloton keeping the break in control. The 3 leaders were caught with 10km to go, just as the field entered the final lap.

“We worked together today very nicely. With 5km to go Phelan was going full gas, keeping me out of the wind and then 1 km to go Meyer took me up on his wheel,” Wippert said. “I am pleased with our efforts and form.”

Wippert entered the final corner with 150 meters to go second wheel and quickly came around to take the lead and the win.

Aldo Ino Ilesic (Team Vorarlberg) was second with Keonwoo Park (Korean National Team) third. Wippert takes the yellow jersey as the 137km stage tomorrow heads into Taoyuan County, known as Peach Blossom Garden.
