Adriatica Ionica Stage 3: Solo Sosa Succeeds!

PeloPics: Ivan Sosa (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) took the win on stage 3 of the Adriatica Ionica Race on Friday. The Colombian attacked to take the solo victory and the overall lead on the climb of the Passo Giau. Giulio Ciccone (Bardiani-CSF) finished second with Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy) in third.

The ‘break of the Day’ included Giovanni Pedretti and Enrico Logica (Biesse Carrera Gavardo ), Antonio Di Sante (Sangemini-MG.Kvis), Jhonatan Narvaez (Quick-Step Floors), Floris Gerts (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij) and Marco Canola (Nippo-Vini Fantini). On the second climb of the day, Valles, Yukiya Arashiro (Bahrain-Merida), Fabio Felline (Trek-Segafredo), Marco Frapporti (Androni Giocattoli), Michele Gazzara (Sangemini-MG.Kvis) and Marco Canola (Nippo-Vini) crossed to the front group. With the peloton closing in on the break at around 40 seconds; Felline along with Narvaez and Arashiro. At the summit; Felline was 21 seconds up on Frapporti, with Gerts, Petilli and Atapuma (UAE Team Emirates) at nearly 50 seconds.

40 kilometers to go and Felline had 30 seconds on Frapporti and 1 minute on the peloton, 10K down the road and the leaders were together and pushing on to the finish. 20 Kilometers out and Frapporti had gone solo again, but by the start of the final climb the race was all together.

After some failed attacks on the steep early slopes, Ciccone, Sosa, Hermans, Edward Ravasi (UAE Team Emirates), Ildar Arslanov (Gazprom-RusVelo), and Pieter Weening (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij) escaped. Sosa attacked, but was marked by Ravasi and Arslanov with Ciccone joining them. Sosa tried again and only Ciccone could go with him and they gaped Ravasi and Arslanov. Sosa’s third jump, with just over one kilometer to go, gave him the win by 37 seconds over Ciccone and the lead on GC by 18 seconds on Edward Ravasi.
