Milan-Sanremo Photo Special: Saturday’s Milano-Sanremo was another Classic edition of la Primavera, yet again it was Peter Sagan who made the race. We celibrate the Italian Classic with the best photos of the day from Cor Vos and the organizers photographers; LaPresse – D’Alberto / Ferrari.

The day started in cool temperatures in Milan, but it was soon to warm up once the race hit the road towards Sanremo. Before that the riders were presented to the public. World champion, Peter Sagan was happy to give the fans autographs – Would he be the winner?

2016 winner, FDJ’s Arnaud Dèmare would love to repeat and his team were here to work for that.

The roll-out of Milan took its usual course past the Castello Sforzesco.

It didn’t take long for the break of the day to make their move: Nico Denz (AG2R-La Mondiale), Mattia Frapporti (Androni-Sidermec), Mirco Maestri (Bardiani-CSF), William Clarke, Tom Skujins (Cannondale-Drapac), Ivan Rovny (Gazprom-RusVelo), Alan Marangoni (Nippo-Fantini), Umberto Poli (Team Novo Nordisk), Federico Zurlo (UAE Team Emirates), Julen Amezqueta (Wilier-Selle Italia).

The headwind slowed the race, but 80 kilometers were covered in the first 2 hours. The peloton held the break at 4 minutes after the first 100 kilometers.

Michael Matthews was the man for the Sunweb team, 12th place was his final result.

The escape pushed on, but with 100 kilometers to go they only had 3 minutes and it wouldn’t belong till they were hoovered up by the bunch.

Quick-Step Floors had a strong team working for young Colombian sprinter Fernando Gaviria. If the race had finished in a bunch sprint he might have been the man, but 5th was the best he could do. Tom Boonen rode hard for the team in his last Milan-Sanremo – good training for the cobbles of Flanders.

Once the race hit the Mediterranean coast everyone knew the action wasn’t far away.

More castles down on the south coast.

The Capos come one after the other with the Cipressa and the Poggio on the horizon.

The fans were out on the roadside again with the flares. Not good for the lungs of the riders.

AG2R-La Mondiale’s Alexis Gougard put in a strong attack, but he doesn’t make it to the break which was only 1:25 ahead with 40 kilometers remaining.

The Poggio was always the place to attack, you maybe don’t win, but it’s the place to show your strength. Peter Sagan blasted off the front and only Alaphilippe (Quick-Step) and Kwiatkowski (Sky) can get on his wheel… and stay there.

The rainbow jersey does not ease off the gas, but Alaphilippe and Kwiatkowski take their turn to hold the peloton at bay.

Sagan jumps, he looks confident.

But the Sky Pole, Kwiatkowski has a little more left in the tank to emulate his win in Strade Bianche.

All three riders are at 100% and clash as they cross the line.

It was close, but the ex-World champion had beaten the present World champion for Polands first ‘Monument’ win.

Just what the Sky team needed, a win to lift their spirits.

The sprint for fourth went to 2014 winner; Alexander Kristoff ahead of Gaviria with all the top names on their wheels, except 2009 Sanremo winner, Mark Cavendish.

Not a bad podium, three of the top men of the 2017 season so far.
