Southeast Regional Series Rocks Knoxville Leading Into Greenville Finale

Competition, Climbs and Climate Continue to Challenge Racers
(GREENVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 26) – Weekend criterium and road race events rocked Knoxville, Tennessee, in August as the inaugural Southeast Regional Series (SRS) produced by Start Smart Cycling wraps up in Greenville, S.C., Sep. 14-15.

SRS comprised one combined crit-road race weekend per month since May with fields and talent caliber on the increase with each flip of the calendar. Albany, Ga., Montgomery, Ala., Asheville, N.C., and Knoxville, Tenn., have all hosted podium presentations to date, with each venue scoring twelve racer categories. Juniors are a part of that diversified mix, as SRS is proud to be a part of the 2013 USA Cycling Junior Road Development Series.

The Hincapie Pro Men Overall Series standings through the Knoxville leg of the series in August places David Winston (UnitedHealthcare of Georgia-706 Project), Chris Wolhunter (Stan’s No Tubes-Proferrin) and Brian Toone (Friends of the Great Smokies) in 1-2-3 with just three points separating second and third. Stephanie Cucaz (PCP Racing), after four stages, is already the runaway owner of the Hincapie Pro Women Overall Series championship jersey with a 174-point lead over Arden Stelly (Pain Pathways). Michele Moulton (PCP Racing) rounds out the top three in the competition.

The Stan’s No Tubes Pro Men KOM competition is highly contested as Andy Scarano (UnitedHealthcare of Georgia) stays in the jersey with less than 10 points separating first from third as Daniel Zmolik (Stan’s No Tubes) and UHC’s Winston are within reach. PCP’s Cucacz added another jersey to her closet, taking over the Stan’s No Tubes Pro Women QOM Jersey. Ally Stacher (Specialized-Lululemon) slipped into third as Amy Phillips (Hub Endurance) wiggled into second place in the standings.

Wolhunter retains the green and white striped PEZCycling News Pro Men Sprinters Jersey, with Overall leader Winston sitting second and powerhouse Toone in third. The PEZCycling News Pro Women standings are a carbon copy of the Overalls with Cucaz, Stelly and Moulton resting 1-2-3.

The final weekend of the globalbike SRS Championship kicks off with a fast, flat crit less than three-quarters of a mile in length on Saturday, Sep. 14. The Greenville Downtown Criterium presented by Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute will be followed on Sunday with an approximate 9-mile, gradual climb loop of a road race in Travelers Rest, S.C.

Upon completion, SRS will have awarded over $50,000 in cash and prizes across five weekends of racing, all led out by the fleet of Official BMW Pace Cars. SRS will announce its 2014 schedule in late 2013, with an expanded reach in the Southeast.
