INTERVIEW: Sam Bennett was piloted to another Vuelta a España stage win on Thursday's stage 9 by Michael Mørkøv, but the UCI had other ideas. Ed Hood managed to 'have a word' with the best lead-out in the business on the Vuelta's first rest day, before Bennett's second victory was taken from him.
Sam Bennett (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) won the fourth stage of the Vuelta a España 2020. The Deceuninck - Quick-Step rider won the bunch sprint after a stage of 191.7 kilometres to Ejea de los Caballeros. Jasper Philipsen (UAE Team Emirates) finished second, ahead of Jakub Mareczko (CCC).
Giro d'Italia stage 18 saw the race blown apart over the Stelvio. At the line it was Jai Hindley who took the stage and his Sunweb teammate, Wilco Kelderman pulled on the leader's pink jersey. There was also INEOS Grenadiers' Tao Geoghegan Hart in second place on the stage and now third overall. The top three are all within 15 seconds.
Ben O'Connor turned the tables in the Giro d'Italia. Second on Tuesday and first on Wednesday. On stage 16 O'Connor was beaten by Bahrain-McLaren's Jan Tratnik, but on stage 17 he had his revenge by beating Hermann Pernsteiner. The peloton came in over 5 minutes down for Joāo Almeida to hold the pink jersey for the fifteenth day. Tomorrow the Stelvio.
Jan Tratnik (Bahrain-McLaren) sprinted away from Ben O'Connor (NTT Pro Cycling) on the final uphill metres in San Daniele del Friuli for the stage win. The peloton wanted an extra rest day and finished well down on the day's winner. Joāo Almeida (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) put in a late attack for a couple of extra seconds on the overall lead.
