Chuck Peña PEZ sez: When I was younger (I’ve been an active competitive athlete in different sports since high school) I didn’t pay much attention to stuff like stretching and massage. When you’re young you’re invincible, right?
The best part of GoldenEye
Even into middle age I didn’t do a lot in terms of muscle maintenance and recovery. But now, as a senior citizen, I’m a lot more diligent about daily stretching and massage (I have a massage gun and a vibrating roller). The MFLEX is a new tool in my arsenal for the latter.
Part of the beauty of the MFLEX is its simplicity. It consists of a base unit that can be adjusted for width and into which the heads (two different heights) slide and lock. That’s it! And it’s relatively compact so can be easily carried in the supplied bag to the office, gym, etc. Almost anywhere you want to go.

BTW, if you’re wondering what the psoas is (per WebMD):
Your psoas muscles are the main muscular connection between your torso and lower body. Their major function is to help flex your hip joint by bringing your leg up and in toward your torso. They also help strengthen your lower spine, which lends support to your posture.
Think hip flexors. So pretty important for cycling.

But the MFLEX isn’t just for your psoas muscles. The included user manual also shows how it can be used for:
- glutes
- lower back
- upper back
- shoulders
- chest
- thigh
- outer thigh
- inner thigh
- hamstring
- calf
- shin
- foot
I haven’t used the MFLEX for all of those, but can attest that the heads do their job of pushing deep to zero in on trigger points and help your muscles release. NOTE: njoie recommends starting with the low heads for first time users. I definitely echo their recommendation — especially if you’re new to deep tissue massage. The MFLEX is way more intense than a foam roller, so it’s best to start easy and build up. I tried the tall heads and found I could “tolerate” them for some muscles, but that’s because massage is part of my regular routine. YMMV.
If you’re a first-timer to deep tissue massage, use the tall heads at your own peril
One thing to be aware of is that — unlike a foam roller or massage gun — there’s more of a learning curve for the MFLEX. The MFLEX is easy enough to use but you’ll need to pay attention to the instructions in the user manual the first several times you use it to get it right.
Will the MFLEX replace my massage gun and vibrating foam roller? No. But it will complement them as another tool to help my aging body sit on wheels and hang with some of the younger guns on group rides so I can live up to Fausto Coppi’s adage: Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill.
