Venn Var 40 TCD – Filament Wound Disc Brake Carbon Rim and Wheels for Gravel Bikes

The new Venn Var 40 TCD rim delivers aerodynamics optimized for gravel and road disc bikes with wider tires, and enhanced tire stability for superior handling.

The rim profile was optimized for aerodynamics at higher yaw angles (15 degrees and above) instead of the more traditional focus on the straight ahead performance. Riding a gravel bike over gravel or broken terrain is bouncy, and it results in constant changes in the front wheel direction, as well as frequent voluntary direction changes in order to pick the best line. This means that the wheel spends very little time aligned with the overall direction of travel.

“In our testing, the Venn Var 40 TCD aerodynamic performance with a 28mm tire is superior to that of a 55mm wheel with a 23mm tire, at 20 degrees yaw” – said Victor Major, the CEO of Velocite, the makers for Venn rims and wheels.

To achieve this level of performance we leveraged our decade long experience with low speed aerodynamics using CFD simulations and wind tunnel testing.

Another standout feature of this new filament wound rim is the very high spoke pull-through strength. While the industry norm is approximately 350 kgf of force per spoke hole before measurable rim failure occurs, the Venn Var 40 TCD rim is engineered to withstand 650 kgf of force. This ensures that you can use your wheels as intended without fear of catastrophic failure.

Lastly, the 23mm internal and 31mm external width ensures that even wider tires are well supported and stabilized by the rim. This will be appreciated when cornering at higher speeds.

Venn Var 40 TCD filament wound carbon rims are available now, while the wheels will be available over the coming months, custom built in bulk for shops and resellers, or in single sets assembled using a wide selection of hubs.

They are available to end users and businesses either directly from us, or via our regional distributors where present.

POC launches the Omne Eternal
The world’s first self-powered helmet with endless energy

POC is proud to introduce the Omne Eternal, the world’s first self-powered cycling helmet which integrates Powerfoyle, an innovative light-harvesting material, which can convert any light source, indoor or outdoor, into electrical power.

To enhance a rider’s safety on the road, the Omne Eternal features an automatic and self-powered light, which never needs charging with a cable or activation from an on or off switch. Safety and light from clean, endless energy.

Commenting on the release of the Omne Eternal, POC CEO, Jonas Sjögren, said – “Safety and innovation are at the very center of POC’s approach. We can all see the very positive shift towards cycling for transport, health and recreation, but with that change comes the well-documented safety worries and risks that cyclists feel when sharing the road. The Omne Eternal may be a world’s first, featuring groundbreaking solar cell technology, but our focus has been to provide riders with enhanced safety and a seamless user experience. Simply placing the helmet on the head will automatically activate the technology, enhancing safety without ever needing to think about it. And it supports all our efforts towards a more sustainable environment.”

The user’s experience is designed to be seamless, but as is often the case, the technology behind such innovations is highly complex. POC and Exeger, the innovator and manufacturer of Powerfoyle, have been working closely since 2019 to build and test a variety of systems that have resulted in the Omne Eternal, which to most users will look much the same as any other helmet.

Exeger CEO, Giovanni Fili, added, “POC is known for its open-minded and innovative approach to safety and is rightly recognized as the leader in the field. Exeger has over the past decade developed the new generation of fully customizable, durable and sustainable solar cells, creating what others deemed impossible – an innovation with the potential to deliver clean endless energy and to re-define the energy from light. Our long-term partnership with POC is as natural as the light we harvest and we are incredibly excited to be part of the release of the Omne Eternal, which represents a new era of smart helmets to enhance safety for any rider, anywhere in the world.”

The unique characteristics of Powerfoyle, is that it allows for seamless integration without compromising design and aesthetics. Powerfoyle harnesses all types of light energy, converting it to electrical energy in an environmentally friendly way.

POC CEO, Jonas Sjögren, continued – “Our ‘Whole helmet concept™’ illustrates that in today’s world a helmet can, and should, do significantly more than manage impacts. By integrating digital solutions we can protect a user before, during and after an accident. Integrating Powerfoyle opens a world of new opportunities, creating helmets with an endless power source is the key to unlocking new ideas and innovations which have the potential to revolutionize safety.”

The Omne Eternal will cost €250 and be available online from June 2021 on pocsports.com.

Developed by one of most premium bike companies in the world, Pivot Cycles®, the new E-Vault is a bold and sophisticated approach to electric-assist urban and gravel cycling that bolsters human capability and performance. Expanding possibilities and exploring limits, its refined fusion of technology, engineering, and design delivers a tailormade ride feel and an endlessly playful experience for any level of rider — uneven city streets, primitive gravel roads, rocky pavements or hardpacked singletrack, the new E-Vault is at home on a huge variety of terrain.

Unlike other eBikes, the E-Vault delivers the epitome of a custom ride experience thanks to Pivot’s Ride Tune design philosophy, proprietary carbon-layups and unique construction, hollow-core internal molding technology, fully integrated Fazua Drive System that disengages completely so you can pedal without resistance, and all topped-off with wireless shifting and data connectivity for the most premium in ride experiences through and through.

“This bike is a game-changer,” says Chris Cocalis, Pivot’s founder and CEO. “This synthesis of muscle and motor really does introduce limitless possibilities. With the stealth incorporation of a motor and battery into what is already an incredibly versatile platform, the E-Vault brings a whole new level of fun and adventure to pavement and gravel riding and allows more riders, of any and all experience levels, to up the fun factor as well as expand the range and the terrain that they currently enjoy.”

For a perfectly natural ride feel that simultaneously maximizes fun, the German-engineered Fazua Evation Drive System allows cyclists to actually ride the E-Vault with no electric assistance at all (like a “normal” bike) should they want to— without a weight or resistance penalty that most other electric-assisted bikes are associated with when run without power on. This allows riders to power-up their riding when needed, yet still enjoy responsive, lively performance when pedaling by muscle alone. The E-Vault’s sophisticated wireless features make the E-Vault one of the most customizable and intuitive ride on the market, enhancing rider customization and data connectivity. Riders can customize their electric shifting experience, power output, integrate all their personal, fitness and bike data, allowing riders to extract more performance from their bike than ever allowed before.

Featuring a motor that can be adjusted on-the-fly to three different levels of assist ranging from 100 and 250 watts and a powerful 252 watt-hour battery fuels ample range, the E-Vault can provide a gentle tailwind at the end of a long ride or it can be the secret key to a killer sprint. Using the responsive touch interface, riders can intuitively switch between the assistance levels without a noticeable delay, as well as check LED color-coded battery levels with a quick glance to prevent risk of distraction while riding.

Born from the Pivot commitment to pushing limits and setting new industry standards, the E-Vault delivers custom-tuned carbon layups for enhanced Ride Tuning, ISO Flex technology to keep your body positioning optimized while riding, dual-dropped chainstays with ample clearance to put even the widest winter tires on, tight seatstays and progressive modern geometry for precision handling on any path. Evolved from the acclaimed multi-surface Vault (non-electric), the new E-Vault is a lightweight, responsive, nimble handling, carbon fiber dropbar machine that’s equally at home maneuvering city streets as it is commanding gravel missions in the backwoods of nowhere.

Pricing, Specifications, and Availability: The new E-Vault will be available in two color options, Glacial Green Metallic, and Stealth. E-Vault is available as a complete bike with GRX Di2 build configuration priced at $9,999 USD MSRP. The E-Vault is available now, in all sizes, at key Pivot dealers worldwide.

Testing the TorchONE in the City

Tested in the town with Luiz – a hardcore commuter, Luiz uses his one-wheel and Brompton bike to travel around London all year-round.

“Helmets are designed for protection, not prevention. A helmet gives you cushioning during impact… but it doesn’t help you avoid the impact in the first place. Designed to do both jobs, the TorchONE is a helmet that guards you as well as increases your visibility. With large removable curved lights integrated into the helmet’s front and back, the TorchONE helps you be seen in low-light settings.”

What are our backers saying?
“LOVE this idea, it’s a great looking helmet, I ride myself and thought this would be a great addition to help myself being seen.”

“Lights on a helmet are critical for me, your design looks to optimise the view-ability of the rider.”

“A simple, well designed 2-in-1 helmet, great for urban cycling.”

“I found the first version of the helmet and was impressed and saw a kickstarter was coming out for the new one so I saved it and backed it when available. It’s a super unique idea and is a helmet that will save me from buying exterior lights on top of the helmet!”

“My son has started cycling to school (when not in lockdown) and a lighting solution that makes him more visible on the roads seemed like a good idea. Also, the price was fair for a helmet + lighting, the team had a successful track record and from the information on the campaign they are local to us in South West London.”
