Gifts we would want

The PEZ Gift Guide: Shimano S-PHYRE RC903 men’s and women’s road shoes, the R1 Percussion massage gun, Alé Guscio iridescent reflective men’s jacket, Officina Battaglin’s flagship Portofino gets a significant overhaul, LifeStraw personal straw offers next level water filtration in the outdoors, Velo 21 Purple Gain Speed Wax, Floyd’s of Leadville SportsCreams and 100copies new bicycle art edition #52 – Cyclemorphosis.

Shimano S-PHYRE RC903 Road Shoes (men’s and women’s) – $450 MSRP

  • Men’s available in four colors (white, blue, red, black), sizes 40-48 (half sizes available 40-46.5), also wide sizes 40-46
  • Women’s in white,  sizes 36-44 full sizes

PEZ sez: This is Shimano’s top-shelf road racing shoe. Worn and tested by several top pro riders, including Mathieu van der Poel, Primož Roglič, Romain Bardet, and Lorena Wiebes. It’s an update of the S-PHYRE RC902 that I previously reviewed. I’ll have a full review of the new S-PHYRE R903s in the not too distant future, so for now this is just a quick sneak peak.

Men’s RC903

Construction-wise, Shimano uses the same what it calls a 360° surround wrapping upper (think “burrito”) as in the previous S-PHYREs. Dual low-profile BOA Li2 micro-click adjustable dials are also the same. What’s different:

  • Using 3D data to better understand how riders apply pressure throughout the pedal stroke, Shimano optimized the new RC903 shape and materials to maximize power transfer while maintaining comfort
  • The new RC903’s upper construction is more rigid toward the rear of the shoe to hold the foot securely in place, but more flexible and elastic materials are used up front to increase comfort
  • The heel cup is a new secure, anti-twist design/construction
  • Shimano has shaved 10 grams (important for the weight weenies) from the microfiber leather upper

Also, the RC903W women’s model last shape is designed specifically for women with a lower volume and narrower fit.

Women’s RC903W

The most visible difference between the new RC903 and the previous RC902 is the forefoot lacing. Per my review of the RC902: One interesting feature of the BOA system on the S-PHYRE RC902s is the Powerzone lace guide in the forefoot, which allows you to essentially double the lace pull to create additional lace pull if you want a tighter fit. The RC903 does away with this feature. Instead the lacing runs in a figure 8 pattern and isn’t adjustable. Shimano claims the result is improved flexibility of the shoe’s upper and reduced risk of hot spots.

RC902 forefoot lacing. LEFT: The forefoot lace pulled across a second time via the Powerzone lace guide for extra tightness/hold. RIGHT: In its standard configuration.

RC903 forefoot lacing

There’s also a visible difference between the men’s and women’s RC903s. The RC903W is only available in white but its colorway is distinctive from the men’s white shoe. The RC903W is flash.

The white to pearlescent/iridescent fade on the women’s RC903W (bottom) sets it apart from the more “plain” men’s RC903 (top)

I previously wrote: The S-PHYRE RC902s might be the most comfortable cycling shoes I’ve ever worn (but everyone’s feet are different so YMMV). You’ll have to wait for my full review for my verdict on the S-PHRYRE RC903s. However, my intuition tells me I’m not likely to be disappointed. So if you’re favorite cyclist has been really good and deserving this year and is in need of a new pair of kicks, you might want to put the Shimano S-PHYRE RC903 on your shopping list.

And stay tuned for a forthcoming more detailed review!

R1 Percussion Device – $129

PEZ SEz: Recovery made easy?  Well let’s just say it’s recovery made better, that much I can confirm.  I just passed into my 7th decade on the planet, and have bene unable to stop the slow march of time, now seeing marked differences in my overall strength levels, and recovery times.  Granted – I’m no longer trying to turn every ride into a hurt locker type training session, but post ride muscle soreness and slower recovery is a real thing now.

A few months ago I received one for review, and am happy to report this massage gun has become a staple in my post ride / workout / recovery, and also gets a fair bit of use relieving general muscle soreness (like when I strained my back lifting that ladder…)

Packaging is crisp and pro, but what really impressed my was the weight – at 1lb 4 oz, it actually feels like I’m holding onto something with purpose (think workbench-style tools here).  The body is sleekly designed from “aircraft-grade” aluminum, (does that make it better?), fits into my hand nicely and features a textured finish that assures it doesn’t slip outta my hand.  I like the fact that it’s not over designed simply to look cool, and the compact size (vs a lot of other massage guns on the market) makes it easy to pack up for travel.

Now I’m guessing that most of that weight is in the rechargeable battery – which is claimed to last up to 7 hours.  I’ve been using mine for 5 months (3-4 times a month, for 3-5 minute sessions) and have only charged it once – the first time.

Using it is easy.  It comes with four different shaped head attachments designed for specific use with various body parts.  I’ve been using the big round ball a lot, which  covers more area, and I find most soothing.

Press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, and it fires up into the easiest of 4 power modes.  Pressing the power button once again cycles it up to the next power level.  I’ve found level 3 (2600rpm) seems to be my sweet spot.

Since this was my first time using a massage gun, I did some internet research to see if / what techniques would work best for different muscle groups and aches.  So far my research, coupled with my hands on experience, has proven that I only need 2-3 minutes for any particular muscle group, and that going over that can actually be detrimental.  But the vibrations from the head seem to work effectively to relax my sore and stiff muscles, and I actually did feel looser (and better) after using it.

• Four speeds (1800rpm, 2200rpm, 2600rpm, 3200rpm)
• 4 Attachment Heads
• Premium USB-C charging
• Long lasting, Lithium ion battery lasting over 7 hours
• Aircraft-grade Anodized Aluminum body
• 15-minute Self-Timing shutoff to preserve battery life.
• Less than 3-hours full charging time.

• Dimensions: 5.6” x 3.6” x 1.85” (14.2cm x 9.1cm x 4.7cm)
• Weight: 1lb 4oz (0.57 kg)
• Voltage: 11.1V
• Power: 40W Rating (50W Max Power)

Alé Guscio Iridescent Reflective Men’s Jacket

When the wind picks up during your ride, this low volume, highly windproof jacket comes into its own to provide the most effective, comfortable protection. The iridescent, reflective material lends the jacket a decidedly ‘chameleonic’ effect and extreme visibility in low light or darkness. The fabric is covered with microscopic glass spheres that ‘light up’ when illuminated by car headlights for further safety on the road and in tunnels.

Officina Battaglin’s Flagship Portofino Gets a Significant Overhaul
Officina Battaglin, the Italian steel bike brand founded by the former Giro-Vuelta winner Giovanni Battaglin and his son Alex, has pulled the curtain off the biggest makeover of their flagship model, the Portofino.

The new Portofino R showcases the Portofino’s signature style while embracing all the latest trends in road bike design.

“We had been feeling the need to push the Portofino toward the race side for a while,” said Officina Battaglin’s CEO Alex Battaglin. “So, when the update project started, we focused on one single goal: achieving an increase in frame stiffness without compromising on comfort. We opted for a very different approach to the frame geometry by drastically lowering the seat stays. This implied redesigning the seat lug, which took a sharp departure from the classic shape accommodating the seat stays.”

A major difference that has come with the seat lug’s new design is the seatpost locking system, which employs an expander bolt clamp that allows more clamping pressure with less torque. There are no bolts in sight, making for a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing look.

“The new geometry also led to several adaptions on the rear triangle, with new flat chainstays, increased seat stay diameters, and a new proprietary dropout.”

Unlike the Portofino Classic, the Portofino R features a 68-mm T47 bottom bracket, the oversized version of the BSA threaded bottom bracket:
“The idea was to add stiffness to the bottom bracket area, while increasing the space for internal cable routing. And, of course, sticking to an easily serviceable standard.”

Completely revamped paint scheme
The incredibly elaborate paint scheme involves setting a smooth transition between two cromovelato colors with a filigree design where every single logo has to be applied by hand.

With the lugs finished in chrome, the Portofino R combines the best finishes a custom Italian bike has to offer. It will also be possible to personalize selected parts in matching cromovelato finish. The parts available for further customization include handlebar, stem, seatpost, saddle and brake levers.

Only 99 build slots in 2023
For the Officina Battaglin 2023 range, the racing-oriented Power+ EVO will be discontinued. Officina Battaglin will make only 99 build slots available, split between the Portofino Classic (whose design and tech features will remain unchanged) and the Portofino R.

Ordering a Portofino R 2023
The Portofino R 2023 will be available exclusively by ordering at Officina Battaglin. Owners will enjoy the full experience of having a frame or bike tailor-made to their preferences.

Each frame will be custom-made to the owner’s measurements after an individual consultation with Giovanni and Alex Battaglin.

A custom Portofino R 2023 includes:
1. custom steel frame built from scratch in the Battaglin workshop;
2. carbon fork manufactured in Italy;
3. custom cromovelato finishing (one color from the Officina Battaglin cromovelato selection);
4. proprietary steel lugs;
5. head parts;
6. individually numbered plate;
7. Certificate of Authenticity

  • The price for a Portofino R 2023 frameset starts at 8.000 €.
  • Although the Power+ EVO is part of the 2022 collection, as of today there are only 6 build slots left.

Velo 21 Purple Gain Speed Wax – £22.00

It’s finally here! Velo 21’s Purple Gain Speed Wax. Over 3 years in development to give you the Smoothest, Cleanest, and Fastest Drive Train Ever!

Oil-based lubes attract dirt to the chain. The chain goes black as dirt is attracted to the oil. The fine bits of dirt create a cutting paste in the chain which then wear down the pins & plates of the chain. This is what causing the chain to “stretch” (the chain becomes elongated due to grooves being worn in from the oily cutting paste).

Wax dipping your chain does not attract dirt like oil-based lubes and so you therefore do not get the wear to the chain and the “stretch”. Your chain performs better, making the ride much smoother and lasts 4 x longer than if using an oil-based lube.

  • Over 3 years in development to bring you the Cleanest, Fastest Drivetrain EVER!
  • Proven to increase your efficiency buy 1-2% over drip on lubes
  • Proven to make your drivetrain last up to 4 x longer than oil based lubes

100copies New Bicycle Art Edition #52 – Cyclemorphosis

100 copies

Cycling can bring about an amazing phenomenon. With your feet on the pedal and fingers on the bar, the same current begins to run through man and metal. Before you know it, the bike is moving intuitively to your intention, and the feeling is incredible. You and your bike has become one.

100 copies

There is no method to this. It doesn’t even matter what kind of bike you are riding. A child on training wheels can experience it just the same.

100 copies

This artwork invites viewers to interact with it in a simple way as it interprets this transition. It uses rows of bicycle chains to form a cyclist riding off saddle. Come close and the intricate links seem to go on infinitely. Pull back slowly and the links morph into a rider in motion.
