PEZ Spies: Thor’s Look 595

Thor Hushovd is sporting the newest Look – their 595 all carbon racer, weighing a reported 1080 grams for frame + seatpost. It’s comparable inweight to the 585 (when seatposts are added in), but we’re told the new bike is much stiffer, and strong enough to ride and race day after day. Here’s what we saw…

The new frame is 100% VHM (Very High Modulus) carbon and according to Look, incorporates carbon nano-tubes in the lugs to increase frame durability. The frame and fork are all carbon with aluminum only being used in the bearing races in the head tube and the threaded inserts in the bb. Even the rear dropouts are carbon!

The team has two 595 frames at Le Tour – one for Thor, and one for climber Pietro Caucchioli – going for proof that it’s good for both gazelles and mountain goats.

• The head tube features different sized bearings – bigger 1.25 inch on the bottom to take more load – note the flare at bottom.

• A semi-aero shaped seat tube, complete with adjustment shims. They’ve done away with the seat clamp, and introduced the E-Post, that slides down inside the seat tube like we expect, but uses an elastomer internal expansion system to hold it in place and displace loads typically associated with seat clamping.

• The 595 front derailleur is bolted on, unlike last year’s 585 clamper. Note the measuring marks on the 585 seat tube (below).

• Now there’s some fancy cable routing on the new 595. It’s fully tubed inside.

• The cool white carbon cages by Tacx are apparently ‘not for public use’ just yet.

• Seems the ‘classically’ shaped bars are becoming more popular in the bunch, as we see less of the ‘ergo’ bends popular a couple years back.

• Thor’s stem is 140mm – zoiks!

• Check out the carbon shaping around the seat tube – a nice fly-through.

Stay tuned to PEZ as we test ride the new 595 through the Pyrenees and Alps.
