Vittoria Shoes Get Less Sole
Platform racing shoes are out – thin is in! Vittoria Shoes sent us the news of their latest and greatest – a carbon fiber sole that’s 3.5 mm thick, called the Scorpion “Lightech” carbon sole. We’re after our own pair to run across the test-bench, but in the meantime, here’s what Vittoria has to say about the new soles…
– Press Release – Biella, Italy. Vittoria Shoes has developed a new full-carbon sole with a uniform thickness of only 3.5 mm. Called the “Scorpion Lightech” carbon sole, this advancement offers the riders several advantages. Celestino Vercelli, owner of Vittoria Shoes outlined them: “The thinner the sole and the closer we can get the ball of the foot to the center of the pedal’s axle, the smaller the dead spot at the top of the pedal stroke. By making the sole only 3.5 mm thick, we have been able to significantly improve the rider’s pedaling efficiency. Other benefits include lighter weight and greater rider comfort. The new, thinner sole has a lively feel, with just the right amount of resilience.”
The Scorpion Carbon sole was designed with the assistance of Dario Frigo of the Fassa Bortolo Pro team, and Eddy Mazzoleni of Vini Caldirola. Frigo attained the UCI World ranking of Number 2 earlier this year and Mazzoleni was 10th in this year’s Giro.
Production of Vittoria carbon soles is done entirely in-house in Vittoria’s workshop in Vigliano Biellese, Italy.
The Scorpion carbon sole will be available on the Vittoria “Arrow” shoe, suggested retail $279.00 and the Vittoria “Racer” shoe, suggested retail $269.00.
Vercelli, owner of Vittoria Shoes, is himself no stranger to the rigors of pro racing. He raced in the late 60’s and early 70’s on such storied teams as Brooklyn with Roger De Vlaeminck, and the powerful SCIC team. He completed the Giro d’Italia five times and the Tour de France twice.
