What's Cool In Road Cycling

Take The Survey: How Has COVID-19 Affected Your Training?

For cyclists, this has been the strangest of all springs. Instead of races and group rides, events are cancelled and most are forced to stay indoors to train. A new survey wants to learn how COVID-19 has affected your training, and we’d like your input.

For athletes of all sports, the COVID-19 pandemic has ripped out the rug from under us, along with tearing out the 2020 calendar. I had already missed all of 2019 with a bad rock-climbing injury, and was eager for a big return to gravel racing this spring. Not only has that gone, but so has my Iceland bikepacking trip this July along with Steamboat Gravel in August.

Cyclists are still relatively lucky compared to many other athletes. In many countries like Canada, outdoor cycling is still completely unrestricted, as long as it is solo and not in restricted areas like closed parks and trails. Even in countries with total lockdown like Spain and Italy, indoor and virtual cycling has at least permitted physical training for our sport.

Contrast this with sports such as my other passion of climbing, where all indoor gyms and most outdoor climbing spots have been shut. No amount of home improvisation is going to be able to replicate actual training in such sports.

In the past two months, we’ve published articles on physical detraining, along with mental strategies to cope and refocus. Now, we’d like you to help by taking a survey on how the pandemic has affected your training that I am part of.

The Fine Print

This study is a collaboration among over 80 researchers from more than 40 countries. It has been approved by the ethics board at the University of Melbourne in Australia, and is led by Jad Adrian, a sport scientist at the National Sports Institute of Malaysia. As noted, I, Stephen Cheung, am a collaborator in my role as a scientist at Brock University.

The survey is hosted on Google Forms, takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, with no save in progress option.

No identifying information is requested. You are asked for your city and country, as that obviously impacts on local restrictions.

The survey is open now and will be at least through June 2020. It is currently in English, but is being translated into multiple other languages.

Please contact me at [email protected] if you require further information.

Thanks in advance. Keep safe and ride on!
