What's Cool In Road Cycling

TRAVEL: Rewards With Velo Classic Tours

Since their inception 5 years ago, Vйlo Classic Tours has continually created new ways to offer a complete cycling and travel experience. This creativity is paying off, as Vйlo Classic Tours has received a 2005 Trip of the Year Award from Outside Magazine with their winning itinerary to the Swiss Alps and the World Cycling Center in Aigle, Switzerland.

Different from the average “training camp”, Vйlo Classic Tours’ itinerary is a cyclist’s dream week, with the professional facility, 200 meter wooden track and services at the World Cycling Center-including daily massage, a bike mechanic and official on-road vehicle support for all rides – and is centered on the personalized coaching from 7-time World Champion Frйdйric Magnй.

“We approached this with the idea of creating a fantasy camp for cyclists” says Vйlo Classic Tours founder Peter Easton. “There are plenty of no-frills training camps, but nothing that explores the combination of the world’s best cycling facility with some of the world’s most spectacular scenery”.

Highlights on the itinerary include the Grimsel and Furka Passes, featured regularly in the Tours of Switzerland and Romandie, private wine tasting and dinners, and a cable car ride to the top of the Eggishorn Mountain for a view over Europe’s largest glacier, the Altesch, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The trip culminates with a place in la Pascal Richard Cyclosportif Event, a 91-mile timed ride in honor of the former Swiss and Olympic Champ. “It’s a great way to finalize a week of intense training and learning- both on and off the bike. The Pascal Richard event allows our clients to put all of their newly honed skills to test- while enjoying the beautiful landscape in the Gruyиre region of Switzerland”.

More Tours Offered in 2005
For their 2005 schedule, Vйlo Classic Tours has expanded its itinerary to 13 tours, starting with the Spring Classics, and culminating with France’s best kept secret, and one of Lance Armstrong’s favorite training regions, the Langeudoc-Roussillon. Along with the expanded itinerary comes the introduction of two distinct classifications for all their trips- making it easier for prospective clients to decide which experience best suits their cycling and traveling desires. Premier Catйgorie explores the essence of cycling and travel. This is a complete experience that captures the spirit of European culture through bicycling. Hors Catйgorie trips are centered on classic cycling events that challenge your cycling ability and take your travel experience to a new level.

For the Hors Catйgorie tours, in addition to the award winning Swiss Alps Camp at the World Cycling Center, the UCI’s new Pro Tour calendar and Golden Bike Events provide a wide selection of races to see and events to participate in. Starting with the Belgian classics, clients have the option of four (4) 7-day and two (2) 11-day itineraries to see the Flemish and Ardennes classics, including riding the Tour of Flanders and Amstel Gold Race Cyclosportif Events; the Dauphinй-Libйrй and the French Alps, covering the classic climbs of the Alps with special guest Marcel Wust and riding the Megиve-Mont Blanc Cyclosportif Event; the Alps and the Pyrйnйes during the Tour de France, including the Marmotte Cyclosportif Event; and the Spanish Basque Country to see Spain’s top races, the Clasica San Sebastian and the Subida a Urkiola.

For the Premier Catйgorie, the Basque Country is offered, and includes dinner at star chef Juan Marie Arzak’s Michelin 3-star restaurant; two classic itineraries to Tuscany, one being a week-long stay at a luxury Villa; the French Alps, this time including exclusive wine tasting and landmark cuisine by Boris Campanella, Frйdйric Fouquet and a personalized menu from Jean-Marc Reynaud; the Dolomites, which includes a two night stay at the Hotel Rosa Alpina, a Relais & Chateuax spa-hotel in the small Dolomite village of San Cassiano; and the Langeudoc-Roussillon Region, including Mont Ventoux, the historic cities of Nоmes and Avignon, and the stunning beauty of the Corniche des Cйvennes the Gorges du Tarn.

Seriously, you can get this close to the action with Velo Classic Tours.

With their personalized service, a willingness to offer customization for all of their trips, and itineraries that are refreshingly flexible, Vйlo Classic Tours’ initial concept of “ride through history, live in luxury” is getting the recognition it deserves, and their clients are reaping the rewards and benefits of an awesome vacation.
