What's Cool In Road Cycling

Travel: Ride Europe With Marty Jemison

There are a lot of good tour companies offering a bunch of ways to enjoy riding around Europe and following your favorite race. They’re all a little different, and in Marty Jemison’s case, the former US Postal pro leads guests to some of his favorite places, discovered during his racing years in the European peloton.

As a pro from 1994 to 2000, Marty lived in Girona Spain, with other English-speaking pros like Tyler Hamilton, George Hincapie, Lance Armstrong, and Fred Rodriguez, and spent countless hours riding the great roads of Belgium, Holland, Italy, Spain, and of course France. When his racing career ended, it was a no-brainer that he find a way to put his intimate knowledge of European life together with his endless love for riding. Voila – Marty Jemison Cycling Tours was born.

Your Own Personal Hell Of The North
Now in it’s second year of operation, Jemison has a full menu of vacation options, centered around his favorite races. In the spring, he offers different trips to the Spring Classics, taking in a selection of races like Tour of Flanders, Ghent-Wevelgem, Paris-Roubaix, Amstel Gold, Fleche Wallone & Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

The Spring Classics are known as the hardest one-day races anywhere, so why would Marty want to take people back there on vacation?

He says: “The Belgian Classics are the toughest one-day races anywhere – they’re tough races for really tough guys. There’s so much focus these days on seeing the Tour de France, but in my opinion, Belgium, it’s people, culture, and riding are exquisite – second to none. Plus I once took third behind Michael Bartoli in combined points from Fleche Wallone and Liege-Bastogne-Liege and I am very proud of that!”

Summer In France – Mais Oui!
July means only one thing to any true cycling fan – and this year it’s Lance going for #6. Marty rode with Lance from 1998-2000, and as a member of the winning team, has achieved something few pros do. To say Marty likes France is a bit of an understatement, but now he doesn’t have to work as hard on the rides: “I think riding 50-60 miles through Europe and then seeing a Professional bike race in the same day is absolute Nirvana. OR. As an amateur I was on top of Col de Marie-Blanc when Greg Lemond was winning the TDF. The emotions I felt then changed my life. Now I get a big thrill from taking my guests to witness their own “amazing moments” in cycling.”

He’s still connected to the pro teams, and it’s not uncommon for Marty’s guests to enjoy a surprise meeting with riders like Tyler, Levi, Freddy and a bunch more. As a rider who has ridden the Tour de France, Marty is part of the “family” of Professional cycling and lucky for his guests, the friendships go deep.

Girona Spain – There’s No Place Like Home
Marty’s other unique vacation is his “signature tour” in and around Girona, Spain where you’ll travel the roads he and the other members of U.S Postal regularly train on. As a long time resident of Girona, Marty knows the area like the back of his hand, and takes pride in showing guests around his old town and favorite training routes. He guarantees guests will understand why Girona has become a popular home for so many pros.

But that doesn’t mean guests are left to fend for themselves. Marty offers a guest to guide ratio of 6 to 1, and makes sure everyone is well looked after. And the trips offer much more than just riding and watching races. Guests enjoy luxury accommodations in 3&4 star hotels and lodges Marty chose himself.

He put his name on the business, so maybe he is working as hard on those rides, only now it’s making sure everyone gets the most out of their trips.

Trips are priced competitively from about $2900 – $3900, depending on the trip, and include
• Transportation to and from the Airport
• All hotel rooms with breakfast
• Dinners with wine (usually 1-2 nights are on your own)
• Follow vehicle with Clif Bars, power snacks, drinks and bottled water.
• Daily maps of the routes and training tips from Marty
• Light snacks and drinks after each day’s ride

So if you’re looking for an awesome vacation, give Marty a call.
