What's Cool In Road Cycling

Travel: Train With Frankie In Georgia

Yes – we too are thinking about our next cycling vacation – but before you hit the big summer rides, how about a Spring getaway to build some form and enjoy the roads of the Tour de Georgia – all under the watchful guidance of America’s TDF vet Frankie Andreu? Discover Adventures has just the trip…

The roads of the Tour de Georgia are beautiful. I should know, I’ve been there and ridden them. Any cycling fan can get themselves down to the land of peaches in time to witness the best stage race in America, but to do it right would be to do it as part of a tour group, and the esteemed Discover Adventures is the cream of the crop. Solid and knowledgeable, the Discover Adventures folks really show a cyclist a good time both on the bike and off. They’ve re-invented the cycling tour wheel as it were, and now they’re raising the bar again.

Work on riding skills and you just might be as good as these guys one day!

Running March 13 – 18 as a warm up to the Tour of Georgia, Discover Adventures is offering a fantastic pre-tour package under the moniker of the P.R.O. series (Proficient Riding Outdoors) and it features as its ride leader none other than perhaps one of the greatest fixtures of American cycling lore: Frankie Andreu. This partnership of experience and hospitality promises to make this cycling experience like no other. Imagine, the beautiful roads of the Tour of Georgia, coupled with the vast base of knowledge and stories from one of the most experienced riders the U.S. has ever produced? Sounds like a win/win to me.

That’s Dave in black – looking good- but suffering big time last year.

I reached Frankie by phone shortly after Christmas, to get his insight on the PRO series.

“It’s a good opportunity for people to learn a lot of different aspects and ways to improve their cycling that maybe they’re not aware of. One of the bigger values is teaching them how to train right, and bigger still is the professional bike fit, so people ride more efficiently. It’s a good way to have fun, but with a learning, educational background to it. And hey, if you live up north, this is a great chance to get some great riding in March, especially on the Tour of Georgia course!”

How can you find fault with learning from a 9-time Tour de France veteran? When asked if there’ll be other folks besides him adding value to the experience, Frankie says, “Yes, Vince Gee, the USPS domestic mechanic (and by the time you read this with Discovery Channel), and a few others. A good friend for bike fitting, making sure everyone has proper alignment, and I’m talking with a few friends, nothing is final yet on this end, to talk about nutrition, coaching or kinesiology. By the time it’s all lined up, it should offer something very valuable to every rider there.” Right now they already have any participant’s moneys worth, adding a few extra touches about nutrition etc. will just be gravy. How cool is that?

Riding in Georgia is great. A Spring tune-up on the roads of the Tour de Georgia – like climbing Brasstown Bald – is even better.

Frankie already does some coaching “on the side, only one or two people” so here’s a chance for cyclists to get the super inside track on some serious pro techniques. Not to mention some candid cycling stories from deep within the peloton.

Where’s The Place
The P.R.O. Series is based in the heart of the North Georgia Mountains, home to both mountain stages of the Dodge Tour de Georgia, including the penultimate stage to the summit of Brasstown Bald. Fans that witnessed it or cycling enthusiasts, like me, that have ridden it are wise to the need for a triple chain ring! And so it would be advised for P.R.O. Series participants training on the 2005 race courses with Frankie.

Who Should Go
Frankie also spoke to whom the P.R.O. Series is suited for. If you’re aspiring to make the Webcor or Navigators teams, you’ve probably passed the need for this cycling school. But short of that, the P.R.O. Series is for all individuals seeking to learn new cycling drills, training methods, the critical need for correct bicycling positioning and gain valuable insight into the nuances of the sport.
